Buy HE400i, and forget the 400s
A couple of years ago, I tried both at the CanJam NYC. With my iPhone and with streamed music, (no amp), I experienced both. The 400s was unnatural and unpleasant to listen to, while the 400i was very natural sounding, slightly lacking only on the top and bottom of the frequency range. It was a beautiful sound and highly recommended for the price , today only in the used market. Great Planar Magnetic Open Back Headphones!!!
These are EXCELLENT PLANAR headphones, and grabbing a pair off of the used market for a fraction of the original, new price is an EXCELLENT bargain! These are PLANAR Magnetic headphones! That means the magnets are super thin and able to respond with sound much quicker than traditional Neodymium magnet headphones! This allows the HE-400S to have quick, accurate sound representing instruments and recordings as more life-like! The sound is clear and distinct! It has more of a studio grade sound, where everything is represented, for the most part, as it sounds, rather than modifying the sound too much. It is a bit warm however (which isn't a bad thing) and the trebles are a little high, but not too high! Does not have a lot of bass because it is an open back design - BUT because it is an ... These are EXCELLENT PLANAR headphones, and grabbing a pair off of the used market for a fraction of the original, new price is an EXCELLENT bargain! These are PLANAR Magnetic headphones!
