  • Non-traditional staging. Great singing

    Der Rosenkavalier is essentially a period piece... there isn't a lot of the turn of the Century Vienna in this Zurich production, tho. I'm no hard-core traditionalist, so it doesn't bother me...much. The musical performance makes up for it all. Nina Stemme is a nice surprise in the role of the Marschallin. She is a Wagnerian who can do a lot more than singing loudly. Very regal, strong and yet fragile at the same time. A magnificent reading of the Act I time monologue. Great chemistry with Vesselina Kasarova's Oktavian. Tho that smirk during the final trio is a bit odd. Vesselina Kasarova is vocally wonderful as Oktavian. What a ping in that upper register (tho there is something weird about the very physical breathing technique she uses during the Presentation of the Rose and the trio)! ...
