Big Bird's Big Book by Joe Mathieu (1987)
This book rates far higher than a 5 in my daycare! Big Bird's Big Book has been a part of my daycare library for about 8 or 9 years, and it is among the top 3 of the kids' favorites of all time. I purchased it through Children's Book Of The Month Club and have been so glad I did! The illustrations are amazingly lifelike and colorful, inviting children of all ages to actively participate in "reading" the book. Among the favorites for the kids are the sections entitled In the City, In the Country, and Opposites. There are a total of 6 sections in the book, or 6 different areas of learning. Each section features numerous Sesame Street Muppets such as Cookie Monster, Bert, Ernie, Prairie Dawn, The Count, The fist is Counting. It is an inviting outdoors scene with 1 waterfall, 2 bears, 3 ... This book rates far higher than a 5 in my daycare! It is a very busy city scene with speeding vehicles all throughout, from a fire engine and ambulance to a tow truck and motorcycle. The fifth section is Opposites. It is a construction scene with items used in building to illustrate opposites. LONG board, SHORT board; HEAVY load, LIGHT load; TALL worker, SHORT worker, OPEN lunch box, CLOSED lunch box, and so on. The last section is Playing. It is a fun filled scene with kids playing in the park. They play everything from badminton to leapfrog, hopscotch, jump rope, hula hoop, checkers, blind man's bluff, and so much more. This book is jam packed with lots of things to see, do, and learn. It has provided countless hours of fun and enjoyment for kids of all ages in my daycare. I would very highly recommend it for anyone who works with children! Big Bird's Big Book is just that, BIG! It measures approximately 2 feet high and 16" wide, so storage space should be considered when purchasing it. It is big enough to encourage lots of group participation, and invites children to look thoroughly for that special item or activity. It helps to build attention span length, and provides so many other learning and teaching opportunities beyond just colors and numbers! Grover's right - it IS a terrific book!
Raised our kids on this book, and just started looking at it with our first grandchild. Really fun and absorbing, and one can always find more to see in the big pictures. My first copy ended up falling apart from SO MUCH use, so it was also nice to revisit the book in totality...and the counting section is still a favorite!
