Reviews
M odel Cars M agazine, July 2008 US magazine Randall Olson's latest book does for GM enthusiasts what his first book, 'Ford In -Miniature,' did for Ford fans. It's a beautifully illustrated compendium of all the hand-crafted 1/43 scale models of GM cars up through 1954 that have been produced. Although its scope is limited to hand-built 1/43 scale models (with a few significant diecasts included), the author has managed to find and expertly photograph more than 500 models. My collection exceeds 2500 models and I've never seen many of the models included in this book. In addition to chapters on models of each GM automobile, there's an excellent introduction on how these models are made and a capsule history of 29 companies that make or have made them. Consider this book a 'must' for anyone interested in collecting GM models. Australian Classic Car, September 2008 Australian magazine This is the second of Randall Olsen's titles that we have reviewed with a similar approach to this fascinating topic. In January 2007, it was Ford in Miniature. Now he has turned his attention to 1:43 scale models of GM vehicles, limiting his focus to the period from the 1920s to 1954. The book is divided into the main GM marques of Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Buick and Cadillac, and includes a chapter on Chev and GM light trucks. Details are also supplied on the main model manufacturers such as Brooklin, Milestone, Rextoys and Western Models. Each model is covered in depth in text and plenty of clear photographs, often difficult to achieve with models at this small scale. Readers will also notice that handmade models don't come cheap due to the amount of labor required. Serious scale model collectors and true GM believers alike will find this colorful book a must., "The more immersed i became in the 160-page book, the photos began to tell the story. And the detailed photography is excellent, one could almost be fooled into thinking one was looking at the real thing and not a scale model." Nigel Matthews, driving.ca / theprovince.com, Old Cars Weekly, August 2008 US magazine No, this isn't a model, but Randall Olson's 'GM in Miniature' is a must-have reference for anyone interested in top quality 1:43 models of 1927-1954 General Motors automobiles. Subject matter is limited to hand-crafted 1:43 models - no plastic models, few die-casts, no models in other scales - but the author has found and photographed more than 50 models of GM cars and light trucks. There are 160 pages packed with tables, excellent color photos and well-written and researched text, with a chapter devoted to models of each GM brand. I've been collecting 1:43 models for 42 years and this book has many, many photos of models I've never seen. The price is $49.95, and Veloce Publishing, at www.veloce.co.uk, will tell you where to find a copy., ToyCollector.com, September 2008 An excellent overview of 1:45 Models This is the second 'In Miniature' book by Randall Olson that I am reviewing and I like it almost better than the first one. Lots of lists, photos and detailed descriptions of more than 500 great 1:43 scale models from the 1920s through to 1954 by various GM brands. Lots of woodies, emergency vehicles, big convertibles and commercial vans. Another great coffee table book (it's almost hardback quality). Looking forward to the Chrysler one, Randall! Overall rating: 4 stars Completeness: 4 stars Informative: 4 stars Good images: 5 stars Presentation: 4 stars Value for money: 4 stars Cars & Parts magazine, October 2008 US magazine The title of this fascinating book is succinct, descriptive of content, and fails horribly to convey the depth of research that has gone into this project. From handbuilt, museum-quality replicas to the classic Dinky Toys, from dealer models to exquisite creations by Brookline, General Motors light trucks and cars from the 1920s to 1954 in miniature parade across each page. In addition to the excellent photography, there are detailed lists of model builders and the handbuilt models available today. For the serious collector there is also pricing information. Ensuring every aspect of miniatures is addressed, there are illustrated, informative sections on model construction. This includes white metal and resin models. This book is more than an illustrated history of an overlooked chapter in automotive collecting. It also presents the intriguing possibility that maybe I can afford a LaSalle, Buick Skylark, or Buick Y-Job, even with my limited budget., Review from Model Auto Review, March 2008 UK magazine You will recall Randall Olson's previous book on Ford in Miniature, and he is even more proud of this second book. "It has over 100 additional photos from a greater variety of points of view and profiles of select replicas", he says. He saves me the trouble of pointing out an error, by apologizing in advance for crediting the creator of Tron Models as Paolo Rampini, when he meant to say Paolo Tron. "I have an excellent book on my shelf, 'Model Cars Made in Italy'. Its author is Paolo Rampini. I must have made a mental substitution that made it past the editing stage", he says. He only covers 1:43 models, mostly handbuilts, so as usual I looked first for any of my own products. Sure enough, Randall gives a very generous review of the Sun Motor Co Cadillac series 75 limousine, considering its humble origins as a stretched Ertl diecast model! More deserving handbuilt creations from the likes of Elegance, ABC and the like get appropriately lavish analysis with top-quality detailed photos. Fans of any GM marque, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick or Cadillac, will have to buy this book, as will commercial vehicle collectors, as Randall also covers vans and pickups. In fact anyone with any American cars in the collection, or any fan of Americana will find GM in Miniature fascinating and useful. Review by Wayne E Moyer for SMI Scale Models Collector, June 2008 Monthly magazine Randall Olson's second "In Miniature" book does for GM enthusiasts what his first did for us Ford fans; it provides lists, photos, and detailed descriptions of more than 500 top-quality 1:43 scale models of automobiles built from the 1920's through 1954 by the various General Motors companies. While a few diecast models are shown, the overwhelming majority of the models illustrated are highly detailed hand-built white-metal and/or resin miniatures. Within each chapter the models are tabulated by year and model and then described and photographed in that order. One or more models in each chapter are profiled with multiple photos and an in-depth description. All photos are excellent; carefully lighted and exposed, beautifully printed, and large enough to see all the model's details easily. The well-researched text provides information on the date of manufacture, colors, and quality of each model. I've been collecting 1:43 scale models for more than 40 years but the author has managed to find and photograph literally dozens of models that I didn't even know existed, much less had ever seen or owned. This is a book that I find myself paging through over and over. It's also very useful for newer collectors who would like to see what a model looks like and read a description written by someone who'd not selling the model before placing an auction bid., Model CarsMagazine, July 2008 USmagazine Randall Olson's latest book does for GM enthusiasts what his first book, 'Ford In -Miniature,' did for Ford fans.
