  • A Must Have Book for Beginning to intermediate Luthiers

I'm just beginning to build stringed instruments at 60 years old and I'm finding much of the information contained in this book to be very useful. A must have for any aspiring luthier.

  • Out of tune instruments seldom get played - what a shame!

After getting started in musical instrument repair I realized there was a lot more to it than glue, nails and a hammer. I needed something to give me a deeper understanding of what a luthier does. How what he knows and does can effect the end product for good or ill. Luthier work is repairing the defects of an instrument and making it sound good again and something one would want to play whether for fun or serious musicianship. This book gives and insight into that knowledge without apprenticeship.

  • Read summary carefully

I misread the summary of the book, No building info only how to tune up your existing instrument. I missed that part. Saw Luthier's handbook and building which is what I was looking for. Very helpful however if you want to upgrade the tone in an existing instrument. The mistake was totally my own, just want to point out some things that others like myself might make. Good book when used for it's intended purpose.

  • Title is misleading no help to the novice luthier

Beginners guide to parts of the guitar, no technical info for the builder

  • How to make a string instrument with character.

There are a number of books on the market that can tell you how to competently construct a string instrument that is appealing to the eye. This book tells you how to be sure it is appealing to the ear. I am glad I bought this book first.
