  • Way ahead of its time (and not a minute too late)

    "L. A. Woman" has been called a commercial album at times, no doubt because of the success of so many singles drawn from the LP, but for my money, it's far from being that. It remains one of the most original pieces from a period that was literally exploding with talent and the proof really is in how well it is standing up now, 35 odd years later. It's an album that was well ahead of its time. Although this was not a 60s album, it really counts as one, since the Doors were very much a 60s band. On the other hand, the music on "L. A. Woman" is such that you could see the direction the band was taking just as it was (unexpectedly) nearing the end of its tenure. In fact, as "L. A. Woman" shows, it was about to explode out of the 60s in a big way, and in spite of the fact that not very much ...
