About this product

Product Information

Mexican-American traditions are richly nourished by the folkways of three cultures: Indian, Spanish, and Mexican. This comprehensive look at the Mexican-American world includes a range of traditional proverbs, riddles, stories and folksongs; folk narrative, from Pancho Villa to urban ghosts, saints to revolutionaries; customs, from household shrines to irrigation rituals to charreadas , or Mexican-style rodeos; children's games, home remedies, folk foods, crafts, dress, and more. Besides its wide range of folk genres, Mexican-American Folklore is also broad-ranging in space--it covers the entire American Southwest, and in time, it includes material from several generations back, as well as very recent adaptations of customs to modern life. These stories teach readers the importance of courage, resourcefulness and respect for Mexican-American traditions.

  • Mexican American Folklore

As I read this book, Mexican-American Folklore by John O. West, I couldn't put it down and when I did, it was because I needed to go to sleep. This book brought back so many memories of my childhood I had forgotten. My grandmother raised me and she used so many of the sayings that are mentioned in this book. The riddles are so funny and yet I remember them being said in spanish and not quite understanding them. This book translates them and I couldn't stop laughing at some that I didn't comprehend. The little rhymes and poetry are so cute too. I also thought my grandma made them up, but she really didn't. I lost my grandma April 22,2009. She was 94 years old. I laughed and I cried reading this book. I wish I had found it sooner so that I could have shared it with my grandma as ...

  • Fascinating
