About this product

Product Information

Nintendo's 8-bit boxing sensation makes a comeback with Punch-Out!! for Wii, a fanciful re-creation of the well-remembered NES game that features cel-shaded 3D graphics and motion control options. Still striving under the tough-love tutelage of trainer Doc Louis, the diminutive boxer Little Mac once again hopes to fight his way up the ranks and take a shot at the championship belt.
As in earlier arcade versions of Punch Out!! and Super Punch Out!!, the player's perspective is from directly behind Little Mac, who appears semi-transparent in order to allow a clear view of his opponents. Although opponents and their quirks follow patterns similar to those manifested in earlier versions, the control scheme in the Wii version of Punch-Out!! is meant to be accessible to anyone, whether a fan of old NES games or not. Players hold the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk, one in each hand, and simply punch with their arms to make their fighter throw punches in the game. No matter how quickly or forcefully the player swings, however, Little Mac can only punch so quickly and so hard on screen. Mac can throw a limited number of punches over time. He can't overpower his opponents, so the focus is on getting the timing right to make each one of those punches really count.

The analog stick on the Nunchuk controls Little Mac's dodges, and it also allows him to throw uppercuts, if held upward as the player takes a swing. Opponents include such notorious and nostalgic favorites as Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, and King Hippo. Each is more intimidating than the last, but each has a secret weakness that the player can exploit. For true fans of the 8-bit originals, the game offers a second control option, in which the Wii Remote is held sideways and operated as an NES controller, with the D-pad under the left thumb and the "1" and "2" buttons in place of the "B" and "A."

    A true classic redone right

fun for the whole family. It's even fun when you lose! use the nun-chuck and wii-mote control scheme combined with the wii-board for a challenge and work out. it'd be an even better game if they brought back ALL the characters from the NES and SNES versions. the only slight downside is the controls could be a little more responsive.

  • Punch-Out!! does not dissapoint.

This game is fun. It is just like the original, but with all the improvements that you would hope for. There is a great mix of new fighters and fighters from the original to face up against. The controls a fairly simple, once you read the instructions. You can even use the Wii remote like the old NES controller if you want. One thing I noticed that is different from the original is that as soon as you loose a fight, you can have a rematch with that fighter as many times as you want. The original game would make you fight another fighter to earn a shot at fighting that higher ranked fighter you lost to. You can also go and fight an exhibition against any of the fighters you have already faced, to get used to their fighting techniques and learn how to counter that fighters punches. ...

  • Fun rebirth of a classic

There are basically two reasons I bought the Wii version of Punch-Out. One is that it is a fun cartoony game that is very close to the original one and the other is that it allows control using both the remotes and the balancing board. There are three modes of control. The remote alone lets you play like the original Nintendo using buttons. Remote with nunchuk connected lets you punch with your hands, but requires the use of the joystick to duck and dodge. Adding the balance board to this setup lets you duck and dodge for real with your whole body. The first two control modes allow for two players, while the balance board is for single-player only. In single-player there is a practice mode and a career mode that pits you against a succession of opponents. The controls are simple, but ...

  • Really fun game

This game is a cool remake of the old NES punchout series. The two player mode lets you battle friends or family members to see who is the best. I like that it has motion sensitive controls (and it was good idea to make it also use the wii balance board, but the input seems really slow and not very refined - while I'd give them an A for the idea, I'd also have to give a D for implementation...) and some strategy to know when to dodge/block and when to punch. After playing other "shape boxing" games like gold's gym cardio game that also has motion sensitive hooks, jabs and uppercuts. In Punch-Out you have to use the control stick to dodge and to change between hooks and jabs, etc. But over all it's a fun game and can be pretty good exercise. I use wrist weights and play the exhibition ...

  • Punch-Out!! (Wii, 2009) Review

I purchased this game because I wasted the bulk of 1988 trying to knock out "Iron Mike" in the original NES version. The graphics are much better, but the jist of the game is still there, and even after 20 years, its like riding a bike to get right back into it and start working your way through the circuits. This game is just plain fun. The two player mode is also great, and my son and I have a laugh when little mac turns into "incredible hulk" mac. I paid $35 including shipping and am happy with that. I would have been disappointed if I paid $50 from the store. There isn't a lot of reply value after you get through the three circuits, although all the opponents do have challenges you can try. (like winning the fight without ever ducking, dodging, or blocking a punch)
