About this product

Product Information

Colleen McCullough's sweeping saga of dreams, struggles, dark passions, and forbidden love in the Australian Outback has enthralled readers the world over. This is the chronicle of three generations of Clearys, ranchers carving lives from a beautiful, hard land while contending with the bitterness, frailty, and secrets that penetrate their family. Most of all, it is the story of only daughter Meggie and her lifelong relationship with the haunted priest Father Ralph de Bricassart-an intense joining of two hearts and souls that dangerously oversteps sacred boundaries of ethics and dogma. A poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit, Colleen McCullough's acclaimed masterwork remains a monumental literary achievement-a landmark novel to be cherished and read again and again. • The Thorn Birds Review

I had to read this book for an overseas project I am doing. My overall goal is to do part of my student teaching in Australia, so they assigned us a reading from an Australian author about our host nation. The book itself is very well written. I, personally, did not find this book to be one of my absolute favorites. I found myself extremely connected to the characters, which was good, but then I hated to feel the pain of the horrible things that happened to them. Overall, if you are someone who does not need a perfectly happy ending and enjoys a good drama, I would definitely suggest this book to you.

  • The Thorn Birds

Loved it in the 70's & had it in PB but it fell apart over the years. Now I have it in HB w/DJ and though it's old and pages are yellowed and used I love reading it again.

  • Fantastic book that became an even more fantastic movie

Have you seen The Thorn Birds movie???? If you have or haven't you need to take the time to read the book. The book is different in many ways from the movie. I was really surprised that the movie didn't follow the book more closely. Even with this said, you won't regret getting the book. It'll hold your interest all the way through. I've become addicted to The Thorn Birds and I'm wanting to read everything I can about it. I was a bit hesitant about reading the book. It's rare that the book is any where near as good as the movie. In this case, the book even with it being different in many ways it's still as good as the movie. It's really hard to put down. In many areas it goes into more detail then the movie does of the lives of those that live and or work on Drogehda. You won't ...
