About this product

Product Information

The Tamron SP 500mm is a lightweight, compact 500mm ultra telephoto lens featuring a mirror-type optical system. If you're not familiar with them, mirror lenses use a pair of shaped mirrors to bounce light back and forth within the lens. This, combined with other optical elements, allows a long effective focal length in a compact space. As a result, mirror lenses are small and lightweight despite their powerful focusing power. Although its reach is exceptional, the Tamron is about the length and weight of a mid-range telephoto in a standard design. The Tamron SP 500mm uses seven elements, including the two mirrors, in four groups. The rear element surface features a silver evaporation coating to compensate for spherical aberrations on the reflective surface. As a result, the Tamron produces high-quality images throughout the focusing range. In addition, you'll find that mirror lenses produce an unusual style of bokeh, the aesthetic quality of blur in the out-of-focus highlights of the image. The circular bokeh highlights result from the front or secondary mirror, which blocks the central part of the lens opening. In addition to creating unusual bokeh, the mirrors tend to lower the contrast in photos. If you prefer more intense contrast, this can be easily corrected in your photo using any imaging processing program. The Tamron SP 500mm has continuous focusing from infinity to macro range. At the macro range, the lens has a 1:3 maximum magnification ratio at 1.7 meters. The Tamron SP 500mm has a fixed aperture at f/8. This means that you have to control the exposure through changes in shutter speed or by adjusting the ISO. This aperture feature makes the lens ideal for outdoor photography and long-distance shots. If you are dealing with too much light, you can use a rear filter accessory, which screws onto the end of the rear group at the mount end. That rear filter can also be used for other purposes such as color correction. The Tamron is strictly a manual focus lens due to its lack of electronic components. One of the real positives of a Tamron lens is that Tamron Adaptall mounts can fit nearly any film or digital camera from major brands like Canon, Sony, and Nikon. That means this lens has a wide range of possible applications to be compatible with multiple cameras that you already own.The small physical size and modest weight of the mirror lens mean that it is possible to hold the camera while taking photos if a tripod is not available. It offers an appropriately fast shutter speed with excellent results. This is a 500mm lens, equivalent to 800mm on an APS-C sensor, so shooting with a tripod or monopod lets you take your shots with perfect ease. Its smaller size also makes it more discreet if you happen to be using it for nature photography and don't want to disturb any creatures. The lens weighs less than 2 pounds and is easy to balance with the camera body of your choice.

Zuiko 100mm f/2.8 lens was in pristine condition as described. Delivery (from Japan to Belgium) was really fast. The lens was also impeccably wrapped. I also liked that the price paid is really the final price, i.e. there was no extra cost (VAT, customs, shipping). It was a pleasure to buy from this seller and I will surely do it again.

A difficult lens but a fun challenge

I don't have a lot of experience with all-manual lenses. But I was finding that my 300mm wasn't reaching close enough for some wildlife shots so I thought I'd give this a try, as it was the only way to get a bit closer without breaking my budget. Overall, I'm happy that I bought it and will keep it for the time being. It is quite difficult to use for birding and I can't recommend it for that. The in-focus sweet spot is extremely narrow, and by the time you get it sharp enough the bird will likely have moved on. The actual act of focusing is aided by a very high-quality, responsive focus ring, but there's no getting around this structural issue. You'll be using this for still and slow-moving subjects only. I don't have issues holding it steady enough, but a monopod and in-body OIS on my ...

  • Very happy with this lens

I love the quality of images from this lens, but it's subjective for out of focus areas. You either love or hate the bokeh. For in focus areas, I find the lens to be very sharp. I've heard complaints on contrast, but I find the lens gives a nice warmth. If anything, shots can come out a little dark, but that is a result of shooting at a faster shutter speed. The best long focal length lens I've tried so far.

  • its ok

its compact in length, but it wont fit in your average camera pouch as its still wide. images are verysharp with right shutter speed and stabilization. manual focus is tricky in action as DoF is extremely thin so its more like spray in pray in action and adjusting focus. for stabilized shots it will not be a problem and results are great

  • Great value for the money compared with a 500mm f4.5 lens.

The reason that I bought Tamron reflex lens is the bokeh. Traditional lenses can't give me such effect especially for taking the pictures of lotus and portraiture, it's really nice of the background. I don't like this model 55BB is it's tripod fixed on the lens is no longer fitted (old model 55B was fitted). This would cause the virbration very seriously even you put it on the tripod due to the uneven of the balance . The performance of this lens is quite good compared with other brands, especially the minimum focusing distance, it gets 1.3 meters which produces 1:3 macro effect. Since there are no more reflex lenses produced by the manufacturers except Samyang, S. Korea (also OEM for Kenko, Vivitar ... etc.) but very disappointed for it's contrast is ...

  • Excellent value

For a relatively inexpensive lens it has a surprisingly good image, sharp to the edges. It's also compact and light for a 500mm lens. Because of its design out of focus objects show the classic doughnut effect but for what I use it for it is simply not an issue.
