Synopsis
The New York Times bestselling novel from Garth Stein-a heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of a dog's efforts to hold together his family in the face of a divisive custody battle. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man., The New York Times bestselling novel from Garth Stein-a heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of a dog's efforts to hold together his family in the face of a divisive custody battle. Love This Book

I had read this years ago. These days I try to find books that I know I loved on CD for my blind aunt. She listens to several per week and they are hard to find. This was perfect.

  • The Art of Racing in the Rain

This book was suppose to be about life as seen through the eyes of a dog who was owned by a race car driver. That is exactly what it was! Although a bit far fetched as far as the idea of afterlife for the dog was concerned, I found the dog's perspective on what he was seeing very entertaining, sad, joyous, informative especially about racing, and family oriented. I am glad I listened to it on audio book as opposed to reading the book itself because near the end I was crying so hard I probably could not have actually read words on paper. Oh yes, it was devastatingly sad almost all the way through but there were enough uplifting parts in between the sadness to kept me listening to find out just what was going to happen at each stage of the adventure. Thank goodness at the very end there was ...

  • One of the best books ever read by a great voice!

This is by far one of the best books ever, and to be able to listen while driving is such a bonus. I bought this for my mom, also a dog lover who because of a stroke cannot read. She loves the tone of the performer, and his pace. I love this story about staying strong and true in the face of adversity, and unconditional true love. Oh and dogs should have gotten thumbs!
