Dissapointing
Heard these Hemkes were a good "Jazz" reed, so tried them on an Allora Chicago Pro Tenor with an Otto Link NY Metal mouthpiece. VERY disappointed. I had hoped the problem was just one reed, but no; ALL of them: for want of a better word, the "tone" sounded "damp", muffled, and totally lacking! Yes, it was very playable across all registers (although overblows were not easy to achieve), but frankly for a reed that RICO touts as a professional jazz reed, this falls WELL wide of the mark! There is absolutely NO variation in tone whatsoever so the player does not have the flexibility to switch from one genre to another and know that his reed is capable of handling the switch with just a minor ligature adjustment &/or embrochure adjustment. Great reeds, very versatile!
I've been playing sax for 2 decades now. After trying many brands of reeds I found a couple Hemke reeds that came with a sax I bought on EBay. I tried these years ago and didn't like them but figured I'd try them again. That was 3 years ago and I haven't used any other brand since. I like the richness of tone I get mixed with the flexibility. On my setup (Otto Link Early Babbit Super Tonemaster) I can go from dark to bright on a dime. I love the bottom of the horn as much as the altissimo. And I find I can 'break in' one of these reeds on a gig if I need to and they last a good while. I find them to be consistent, rarely getting a bad one. In fact I don't think I've had a bad one at all yet! My setup allows me to play in whatever style I need so since I switched to Hemke my need to shop ... I've been playing sax for 2 decades now.
