Key West in the 1840s is filled with salvage businesses thriving on the cargo of wrecked ships dashed against the coral reefs. Spunky ship owner Loxi Claiborne (Paulette Goddard) suspects salvager King Cutler (Raymond Massey) of foul play, since he's always first on the scene at a wreck. The independent, kittenish Southern gal is waiting on deck to help rescue the latest survivors of a wreck when she meets courageous Captain Jack Stuart (John Wayne), who instantly falls for the free-spirited Loxi. Loxi and Jack promise themselves to one another and make arrangements to meet up in Charleston. But, once in Charleston, Loxi meets lawyer Stephen Tolliver (Ray Milland). Despite Loxi's refusal to act like a typical blushing Southern belle, she quickly entices the debonair businessman, who decides that he will do anything to make her his wife. The rivals in love become enemies in the courtroom when Jack helms another wreck and Tolliver suspects foul play. Who will be found guilty and how hinges on some amazing developments. Along with the star-studded cast, this glorious sea spectacle stars huge clipper ships, storms splintering on the rocks, and a giant squid in a memorable underwater battle.

The year is 1843, and a major hurricane has just swept through the Florida Keys. An unfortunate ship has been driven onto the reef and is sinking. All of the salvage boats are scrambling to get there first and be the one to claim salvage of the cargo. Loxi Claiborne (Paulette Goddard) is running her salvage boat, CLAIBORNE, but is second to arrive, behind King Cutler (Raymond Massey), who probably may have actually planned the wreck. Loxi and her crew rescue Captain Jack Stuart (John Wayne). While nursing him back to health, Loxi falls in love with him. When her sister Drusilla (Susan Hayward) visits Charleston with her, Loxi schemes to win a captain's position for Jack by seducing Steve Tolliver (Ray Milland), the man who is running the sailing ship line that Jack works for. Jack and Loxi now discover that his appointment as captain to the steamer SOUTHERN CROSS has been concealed by Steve on orders from his superiors. Feeling betrayed, Jack makes a deal with King Cutler. He has found out that Steve's boss has just died and now Steve will surely take over the shipping line. Realizing that his position will almost surely be withdrawn, Jack now plans to sail to Havana and take over the SOUTHERN CROSS, and sail her onto the reef so Cutler can salvage the cargo. After taking command in Havana, Jack heads for Florida. The price of her cargo fluctuates wildly on rumors that the ship will be scuttled. Steve, suspecting that a wreck is planned, commandeers the CLAIBORNE and he and Loxi head to Havana. Loxi believing that Jack is innocent, disables the ship. They are unable to sail, and while immobile in a fog bank, can hear the horn of the SOUTHERN CROSS approaching, closer and closer, until it comes into view and smashes onto the reef and sinks. Unknown to Jack, Drusilla had stowed away in the cargo hole and drowned when the ship sank. Jack is put on trial for wrecking his ship. The testimony reveals a woman may have been on board, though none was rescued. To determine if a woman is in the wreck, Steve agrees to dive to the wreck with Jack. While down in the wreck, Jack and Steve discover proof that Drusilla was on board and has been drowned. They are attacked by a giant squid. Jack saves Steve's life but is lost when the Southern Cross slips off the underwater shelf into deep water. Loxi seems to get over the loss of Jack pretty quickly and marries Steve. They move to Charleston.
