Fine recorder, if you have the remote
This is an excellent CD recorder, made by LG Electronics in Korea around the turn of the century. Like all "consumer" recorders it requires the "Music" CD-Rs, but unlike many other models of its era it still works with currently-available discs. I've been using the slightly later CDR 20 for a couple years, and the only trouble I've had is with certain batches of CMC discs (Verbatim, especially) but those don't seem to work on a lot of recorders. The main problem with the Harman Kardon recorders are that they require the remote control to manually add tracks; in fact the "auto-track increment" function, which works poorly with analogue sources, can only be activated with the remote. There are a few minor issues, such as the level "meters" lacking any warning of where "overload" is about ... The display also runs the track numbers into the time display. It also "forgets" the settings for "input" when powered down, though again from the remote it can be put into "standby" mode where the setting is retained. An odd item I've had happen a couple times on the CDR 2 is that the "remaining time" shows a couple minutes more than exist on the disc; this seems an intermittent problem, and does not affect the recording. I've been using Maxell discs, which are made by Ritek, and have had no problems playing them back on other machines. The sound quality is good, the recorder very well made. It doesn't add tracks as smoothly, from "stop" mode or to a partially-filled disc, as the Philips recorders did, but is fine from "pause" during a recording session. In all a very good recorder, when found it working condition, but make sure it comes with, or that you have, the remote.

A thorough disappointment!
Unfortunately this unit was created with a faulty second cd drawer. We have one, too with the same issues and we’re hoping to find another model that was free of challenges, however that was not the case. Though claims of machinery being tested were stated, we did not find this to be the case. A thorough disappointment!

So, it compares favorably to just about everything on the market, including the professional recorders (which are not always as professional as they would lead us to believe). I rated the Harman as 'GOOD', only because the play side of the machine is a little weaker than most of the 'play only' mechanisms out there. However, it's not all that much weaker than the play side of the Dennon pro series and still stronger than some lesser brands. If you're looking for a good CD recorder and can land one of these for under a hundred used and if it's been cared for, then it's a steal. The ... The recording side of these Harmans is very strong, will record very well and play back almost anything. The recording side is vastly stronger than most consumer recorders and slightly stronger than Dennon and Tascam pro series. I have recently compared the three side by side. I also have a lot of experience with most of the other brands out there, both consumer and pro. The consumer "music" discs are now cheap and there's no big reason for most of us to have to have a pro model. The SCMS won't bother you if you're copying LP's, tapes, a computer disc, or compiling songs from record company CD's. In fact, the converters on the Harmon are so good that even if you want to make copies of a copy of a protected disc, you probably won't be able to hear the difference. And that's the case with most of the consumer recorders out there. So the Harman comes highly recommended. It's a very stylish machine. I use mine in the dark and it's the only machine I've ever used where each button's fuction is lit up. I use the Harmon more than any of my machines. Get the remote, if you can, and that goes for all brands. I also recommend Pioneer recorders next, followed by Sony. All recorders have their various strengths and weaknesses. Get the manuel and read it!! Use the blank CD's recommended by the manufacturer, there is a huge difference in CD's. When in doubt, I would say Maxell first, Sony next, and then Memorex somewhere down the line. Hope this helps someone. Bob ps Dust, humidity, and smoking are the enemies of CD recorders. The bedroom is a terrible habitat for a recorder. When buying a used recorder, you want one that's been kept in a closed entertainment center in a living room. Bob

Hard to find configuration
For 15 years I had a dual deck Yamaha CD recorder, on which I dubbed about 1500 recordings. When it died with parts unavailable, I found this Harmon Kardon, which is a good replacement. It's no secret that the movie industry is trying to replace CD's with online streaming, which is a very bad idea from my perspective. The reason is that in the past when an older format, such as vinyl, was made obsolete, many of those recordings never appeared in any form ever again. Similarly, when the entertainment industry (and Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.) do away with DVD's in favor of online streaming, many excellent titles simply disappear. My point is by putting your collection on CD or DVD, you prolong the inevitable disappearance of titles. HOWEVER, over time I've found that CD's deteriorate and ... Great CD Recorder for recording or dubbing
I bought CDR 2 recorder to copy old 78s so that I could save wear on the originals, download to my computer to use noise removal software, and dub copies for others. It has worked flawlessly. I especially like the record level display for setting the proper level. The user manual that came with it was very detailed and useful. I also wanted to play my existing CD collection, replacing an older CD player that had failed. The CDR 2 has been great, and I have really enjoyed it. I have nothing negative to say about it, and recommend it wholeheartedly.I bought CDR 2 recorder to copy old 78s so that I could save wear on the originals, download to my computer to use noise removal software, and dub copies for others.
