George Falconer (Colin Firth) feels lost. Not only is he still grieving the death of his longtime companion, Jim (Matthew Goode), but he's also a Brit teaching English at a California college. He's so distraught with heartbreak that he's decided to kill himself, and proceeds to get all his affairs in order while carrying on with what otherwise would be a normal day. He gives an unusually forceful lecture to his class, revealing enough that a perceptive student, Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), senses something is wrong with the professor; collects his important financial papers from his bank; buys bullets for a handgun he owns; and makes a visit to his best friend (Julianne Moore). But throughout these methodical preparations, George keeps running into people -- a colleague's daughter, a attractive gay hustler, and the sympathetic Kenny -- who offer him glimpses of why he should stay alive. A SINGLE MAN is the directorial debut of legendary fashion designer Tom Ford.

    Colin Firth plays George, an English professor who lost his lover of sixteen years one year ago today. His lover was Jim and the year is 1962. George can no longer cope with the grief over his loss as he is all but friendless in California, nobody except his longtime friend Charley (Julianne Moore) knows he is gay so he cannot express his emotions in public, his colleagues don't even know that he has lost a friend, never mind a longtime lover as he has to put on a brave face and continue with life as best as he can. A possible friendship outside of college with a student may be the only thing that can save George as he has decided today will be his last day and that he will shoot himself on the anniversary of his lovers death. So as you can imagine this is not the cheeriest of movies ...

    The title leaves a lot unsaid about the maina character in the movie

    The movie is good, and i will make you want to read the book, which is even better.

    A Single Man

    The movie is based on Christopher Isherwood’s book of the same name. I watched the movie as soon as it was available on DVD. So now I’m excited to own my own copy. And in high definition. Movie is well done. Both the acting and the script are very pleasing to me.

    Disappointed

    While the lead character (actor) was excellent the story content was a real disappointment. I know that Colin Firth should be able to command better material then this especially after Pride and the Prejudice and the Kings Speach.
