About this product

Product Information

One of the most influential religious books in the Christian tradition recalls crucial events in the author's life: his mid-4th-century origins in rural Algeria; the rise to a lavish lifestyle at the imperial court in Milan; his struggle with sexual desires; eventual renunciation of secular ambitions and marriage; and recovery of his Catholic faith.

  • An inciteful look into culture left behind by today's society!

Augustine's Confessions is a diverse blend of autobiography, philosophy, theology, and critical exegesis of the Christian Bible. The first nine Books (or chapters) of the work trace the story of Augustine's life, from his birth (354 A.D.) up to the events that took place just after his conversion to Catholicism (386 A.D.). Augustine treats this autobiography as much more than an opportunity to recount his life, however, and there is hardly an event mentioned that does not have an accompanying religious or philosophical explication. In fact, the events that Augustine chooses to recount are selected mainly with a view to these larger issues.

  • scratching my eyes out is funner

I had to buy this book for an early medieval history course. It was a horrible read, full of the "Oh I'm such a sinner!" and "Oh LORD you are the best! Jesus rules! Wooo Jesus!" Alright, so it's not exactly like that, but that's pretty much the way the book is written amid random tellings of his story. If you're a Christian, you might enjoy it and cheer right along with him...or die of absolute boredom. It is a very heavy reading and his moral tantrums are just plain annoying. This guy is so self-absorbed. He's a blatant mysoginist (as most were back in the day) and frankly, a bit of an asshole. I pity anyone who has to read that book.

  • Great book for men to read.

Wonderful book delivered in great condition! You see the heart of Saint Augustine as he opens up about his shortcomings in which most all men can relate to some degree.

  • A Serious Christian Read

It is on my back log of reading material, and while I believe it should a serious read for any serious Christian, because I have not actually read it yet, I cannot give an honest evaluation.
