Definitely not for the racially sensitive!
Although "The Birth of a Nation" has been condemned for it's racial content, it stands as a milestone in filmmaking history. Filmed in 1914 and released the following year, it was not only one of the longest movies made in that period (roughly 100 mins. long), but it also introduced a number of filmmaking techniques that are still in use today. It also gives us a glimpse into the American South's perspective on the Civil War and it's aftermath. I found it interesting, as well as touching, that a film so slanted toward white supremacy portrayed Abraham Lincoln as a slain martyr. Lincoln's successor in the film (who strongly resembles 17th president Andrew Johnson, though he is not so named in the film) is lambasted and reviled for his views on racial equality and, in effect, nearly shatters ... Although "The Birth of a Nation" has been condemned for it's racial content, it stands as a milestone in filmmaking history. Woodrow Wilson, who was president at the time of the film's release, had nothing but praise for it. Now, nearly a century after it's creation, "The Birth of a Nation" is almost universally condemned as propaganda for white supremacy. I purchased this movie purely out of curiosity, both as a historian and as a former film student. I gave it an average rating after balancing the film's cinemagraphic significance against it's overwhelming racial bias. It is a powerful film, regardless of the viewer's stance on the subject of race, and definitely not for the racially sensitive. For the film and sociology historians, I would recommend the purchase of this film. For everyone else, it's a matter of taste.
