About this product

Product Information

The riveting memoir of a Vietnam War helicopter pilot. "When you step into a Huey with Tom Johnson, you're in for the real thing. No one has previously captured the Vietnam helicopter experience with such gripping authority."--Robert F. Dorr, author of Chopper From June 1967 to June 1968, Tom Johnson accumulated an astonishing 1,600 flying hours piloting the UH-1 "Iroquois"--better known as the "Huey"--as part of the famous First Air Cavalry Division. His battalion was one of the most decorated units of the Vietnam War, and helped redefine modern warfare. Johnson's riveting memoir takes us into key battles and rescue missions, including those for Hue and Khe Sanh. In harrowing detail, he tells of being shot down in the battle of A Shau Valley, of surviving enemy attacks during the Tet Offensive, and of a death-defying nighttime river rescue, in which only the bare feet of soldiers hanging off the Huey's skids kept the helicopter from plunging under water. From dangerous missions to narrow escapes, Johnson's memoir vividly captures the adrenaline rush and the horror of war, and takes you on a ride you'll never forget.

Reviews
Praise for To the Limit " To the Limit is a first-person journey into the grit, grimness, and chaos of war, told by a helicopter hero in a way that nails the feel, the mood, and the talk of air cavalrymen in battle."--Robert F. Dorr, author of Chopper: A History of American Military Helicopter Operations from WWII to the War on Terror "This is the real thing: helicopter combat at its birth. No wonder Army helo drivers were among the most decorated aviators of the Vietnam War. Tom Johnson truly shows us what the rank-and-file Huey crews experienced."--Peter B. Mersky, author of From the Flight Deck: An Anthology of the Best Writing on Carrier Warfare and U.S. Marine Corps Aviation: 1912 to the Present "Always leery of superlatives in book reviews, I feel compelled to use them in describing Tom Johnson's To the Limit . It is an intense, compelling, gut-wrenching narrative--by far the best account of helicopter warfare I have read."--William Smallwood, author of Strike Eagle: Flying the F-15E in the Gulf War and Warthog: Flying the A-10 in the Gulf War

    I couldn't put it down.

It tells first-hand the experiences of being a piolet in the 1st Cav in Vietnam in 1967-1968. My brother was in the author's WOC flight school graduating class and would have been there with him. Donald never talked about his time in the war. Now I know.

  • A true and moving chronicle of flying helicopters in Vietnam.

During the Vietnam war, the Army helicopter pilot was the most dangerous job the Army had to offer. Have you ever wondered what it was like to have been an Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam? If so, this is the book to read. Tom Johnson (author) chronicles his experiences from the trials and torments of Army Warrant Officer flight school, getting his wings and immediately off the Vietnam where he flew "slicks" (the most dangerous flying in Vietnam) for the 1st Cavalry Division. It is very well written, including enough technical details about helicopters, that even the non pilot can understand it. I thoroughly enjoyed Tom's book. I think you will too.l

  • To the limit

Excellent writer. Written about the same unit I was in a little less than a 6 months before I was there. Some of the people he spoke of I knew, what a walk back in time. When I was done reading, (after disturbing my wife with laughter while she was reading her books, in bed before we sleep) she said she needed to read to see what was so funny. As I don't talk much of my time I flew in Nam, every other page was, "Did you guys really do that?" Then lots of questions....., answer, "Yea, now let me read my new book honey", then would come more laughter, more questions......... "This seems unsureal." answer, "Honey, yes, believe it or not, it is true, and you wonder why I don't talk about it, people would think I'm lying" Many times my photo album would come out and I'd show her pictures ...

  • A must read!

Excellent book, read it in two days. Had it in my hand every free minute. The chapter on the A shou was so well told I could see the rounds coming in and I heard the turbine whine and the chopper slump over. This guy did such an outstanding job telling his story.

  • One of the best

Best of many Vietnam era books I have read. Down to earth account, without bragging, very little profanity. Just makes you want to shake hands with the author.
