Excellent movie for Kennedy assassination conspiracy buffs. I'm not a huge fan of Kris Kristofferson, but he was an absolutely perfect choice for his role, as was Treat Williams. Both actors are natural and believable. The movie can feel a bit tedious as it builds the plot, as compared to today's movies that focus on action over substance. It is definitely a shift in gears for today's viewer. However, the slow pace is what gives the movie "feel" and realism, as if you are there with the two characters as they deal with thier jobs, women, government secrets and a stash of money. Overall, I loved it, with the exception of how it can feel as though it is dragging a bit. Perhaps it is because the movie was based on the book. He had shot the President earlier that day, and now in the pouring rain he was desperately speeding across the desert towards Mexico. With him, a fishing rod, the killing rifle, and the $800,000. cash payment for the job. The windshield wipers were slapping but visibility was bad. . . Twenty-five years later, Ernie and Bobby are sitting in the morning briefing being told that the Border Patrol forces were probably going to be reduced. They were also being briefed as to how to bury sensors for tracking aliens across the desert. Ernie (Kris Kristofferson) and Bobby (Treat Williams) are fed up with everything. They took this job because of the remoteness and ... Believable scenario about what could have happened and the extent of the cover-up surrounding the Kennedy assassination in 1963. A drivers license and a piece of paper with two phone numbers is also found. Ernie covers everything back up and takes the rifle and cash and stashes it until he can find out where it came from. This just might be their ticket out! When he meets up with Bobby, he tells him about what he found. With old newspaper records and research of the two telephone numbers, they find that one of the numbers was for a 1963 telephone number in Washington D.C., and the other went to the Dallas Police in 1963. Suddenly they realize that they have stumbled into a direct connection to the JFK assassination. All of a sudden, there is a lot of interest by the Feds. The jeep is found and people show up and start to investigate it. It seems that these people are interested in doing anything to eliminating anyone with knowledge of this jeep or its occupant. The whole matter is being sanitized in typical cover-up mode. Bobby is found dead, and Ernie is being hunted. There's only one thing left to do. . .run! This was a good movie with lots of suspense and a believable plot. I'm sure that you will enjoy it as much as I did.

LOVE IT! At turns VERY funny, VERY clever, and quite exciting. There are several memorable and clever, funny lines for both Kristofferson and Williams - and a fantastic, ominous, and unforgettable exchange between a then unknown Kurtwood Smith (later the dad on "That 70's Show"..) and Kristofferson's character. Kurtwood Smith plays a menacing federal agent, and is totally convincing in the role - he just blew me away. Great desert scenery, an unfolding mystery, an appalling and sinister secret of historic proportions. Great soundtrack throughout by Tangerine Dream, as well, although the song playing over the closing credits is quite bad. As much as anything else that it is, Flashpoint is a buddy-cop movie, but the "cops" are Border Patrol agents. Kristofferson and Williams play their roles ... LOVE IT! Kristofferson and Williams play their roles perfectly and convincingly, and have superb chemistry onscreen. The story touches on idealism and disillusionment, heroism and villainy. It sounds like a no-brainer, but the strengths are a good story and good character development, and good acting. There are no "SFX" and the movie doesn't need them at all. I was delighted to find this on DVD. Kind of weird that they didn't update it to widescreen format yet, but that's not a big deal really. It would have been pretty interesting to have commentary from Williams and Kristofferson and Smith, but the DVD is pretty bare bones - just the movie and the chapters, no special features at all. That's not a big minus, but it would have been nice to have. I suspect that this movie would have been seen and well liked by a lot more people, had it been promoted well - but HBO produced it, and didn't spend much on promoting it. I find it hard to imagine that many people would not enjoy this movie. Many years ago, my then-girlfriend and I watched it and we laughed hard at the comedic moments in the film, of which there are several. Many mystery/suspense/crime/action films try to employ humor and it seems out of place, or the humor simply isn't funny - but here, all the one liners are funny and they flat-out work. I loved this movie! The whole thing just works really well, all the pieces fit. This movie could be remade, if they could find two actors with comparable chemistry to Williams and Kristofferson, but I'm not sure if there's anyone who could duplicate what Kurtwood Smith did - it literally couldn't be better, I don't care who you would cast in that role, they couldn't top Kurtwood's performance. Great flick..

Good action, drama and conclusion.
Definitely an 80's movie when Trent and Kris were at their best. Slow start but intriguing plot and surprise ending. The viewing went by really fast but well worth the time. Enjoy!!!

The story is very well balanced giving the viewer enough information to be led to the mystery behind the story. Parts of the ending were a bit weak in theme, but overall the conclusion is acceptable. I think there was good chemistry between Kristofferson and Williams, portraying the two main Border Patrol agents of this mystery.Terrific movie, especially if you like subjects like corruption, intrigue, and personal values.
