About this product

Product Information

The nations of Latin America came into being without a strong sense of national purpose and identity. In The Invention of Argentina , Nicholas Shumway offers a cultural history of one nation's efforts to determine its nature, its destiny, and its place among the nations of the world. His analysis is crucial to understanding not only Argentina's development but also current events in the Argentine Republic.

  • A Slow Intellectual History

Not the best book on Argentina I have read. It is slow and limited in scope. As the title suggests, it concentrates on the formation of the nation of Agentina (mostly narrowing it down to the 19th century), but in this case Shumway focuses more on intellectual history than anything else. It is also a literary history and sometimes gets lost in intepreting texts rather than focusing on how these texts shaped the way Argentina developed. It does not, however, touch on how ordinary Argentines veiwed themselves or the texts that these intellectuals wrote. I would suggest this book to those who are very interested in every aspect of Argentina (which I am not), but for casual historians of the country, it might be wise to look elsewhere.
