About this product

Product Information

Writer-director Richard Kelly's bold debut film is a social satire, a dark comedy, a science fiction time-traveling fantasy, and a suburban nightmare about an extremely intelligent, depressive, self-destructive, narcoleptic, gun-toting, sex-crazed, teenaged arsonist: Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal). DONNIE DARKO is not your typical teen comedy. But, like GHOST WORLD and RUSHMORE, it uses the trappings of the teen comedy as the entry point for a subversive and trenchant (and also wonderfully entertaining) look at American life. The difference between those films and DONNIE DARKO is that Donnie is an unlikely hero who just might save the world. It's October 1988, in the Virginia suburb of Middlesex. When Frank, a grotesque giant bunny (possibly imaginary), leads Donnie out of his house minutes before a plane smashes through his roof, he not only saves Donnie's life but also warns Donnie that the world is about to end. Over the next few weeks, Donnie falls in love with Gretchen (Jena Malone) and tries to figure out what his life means. Kelly's film perfectly captures the unease that is quietly scratching under the surface of suburban late 1980s life. Gyllenhaal leads an exceptional cast, bringing Kelly's twisted but humane vision to life. An exceptional performance is given by Mary McDonnell (PASSION FISH) as Donnie's mother.

After my first purchase with bous-stage retro gaming I was left blown away! I purchased a gba insert for Pokemon Leaf Green from them, it was packaged with such care, even attaching a do not bend sticker to ensure it was handled as well as they’d handled it. They also took the time to respond to my inquires over message to ensure I was happy with the condition of the insert! The insert came as seen in the photos, if not better than I expected! | HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SELLER! 10/10 on all fronts!

    Pretty good movie

Definitely worth watching. Acting wasn't the greatest by every actor in movie, but wasn't as bad as some movies. The plot was good. Different than most movies. The only thing I really couldn't stand was the clothing and hairstyles and all but one song. Worth watching, worth buying cause most people I watched this with didn't have a clue what was going on but the second time they watched it they thought they had a better idea.

  • Makes You Feel Surreal. Darko Family is Disturbed?

Donnie Darko, to say the least, is mind boggling. I somewhat wonder where all this dark energy stems from. Frankly, the culmination of various writers, directors, and producers all having this introspective outlook on life helps them speak miles away from normal thought processes, which they happen to want and catch by putting it down in some sort of satirical film. This film seems to allude the mundane thinkers and screams out to please understand this film the way that I wish you could. Donnie (Jake Gyllenhall) is truly a disturbed individual in this film who is trying to get through life with a big secret. He seems to get stuck right at the reality part of life. Living in an affluent suburb with money doesn't seem to have helped Donnie's coping skills. He becomes very angry and ...

  • EERIE PREDICTIONS

Features Acotrs:Jake Gyllenhaal,Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Beth Grant, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Katherine Ross, Patrick Swayze & Noah Wyle Running Time:132 Min. Rating:R It begins innocently enough around the Darko’s dining room table, where we find out the older sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is rebelliously voting for Dukakis and Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal, Bubble Boy) is off his meds. From here, the film churns forward at a hypnotic pace, revealing facts about its disturbed but endearing title character. On the surface, Donnie is very typical -- he has friends and even is (awkwardly) able to net a girlfriend (Jena Malone), but he’s also "intimidatingly" smart, which gets him in trouble for thinking too much and speaking his mind. But Donnie also has a troubled past ...

  • #2 on the all-time-best top 50 independent flicks *****

This is a movie that is hard to categorize. On the face of it, it's a high school movie, about the intelligent kid who feels alienated, about awkward teenage romance, bullies, etc. But that's just the tiniest bit of the surface. A layer deeper is the skull-faced, six-foot-tall bunny rabbit waking you up and leading you on walks in the middle of the night, telling you to commit awful acts, and telling you exactly when the world is going to end (28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds), and what you have to do in order to save all the ones you love from this great danger... Then, there's time travel, the sovereignty of God, and how that relates to time travel, personal responsibility, and how the tiniest decision can have the most gigantic and devastating effects on the people closest ...

  • So What is it Like Having a Whacko For a Son????

This is a movie filled with ambiguity, emotion and often confusion. Donnie Darko is set in the late 1980's when the director/writer, Richard Kelly grew up as a teenager. It is not a thriller nor a horror movie, it is a movie about angst, growing up, what if's and life. There are no action sequences, nor is there any real gore, violence or sex. The director's cut is an ambiguous movie that drops you hints as to what the writer is trying to convey in the story line, and the original version is a movie that is completely ambiguous and leaves you to theorize and create what you wish. Donnie Darko is a troubled teen that sleepwalks, we learn this from the first scene in the movie. If you watch closely you learn alot from that very first scene *hint - the red car that Donnie peddles past is ...
