The National Congress then declared independence and proclaimed the installation of a parliamentary monarchy, and thus, the new country of Belgium was created. Brussels, the country's capital city, also houses the headquarters of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Entries spanning "abortion" (referring to a 1990 liberalizing law) to "Zwarte Zondag" (cross-referenced to the 1996 "Black Sunday" elections) cover all aspects of the country's history, politics, economy, and culture. The volume includes a good introduction to Belgium's history; a basic map; chronology (58 BC to April 2006); information on the country's kings, governments, and economy; and an extensive general and specialized subject bibliography., Academic reference departments supporting history departments with extensive teaching and research on Western Europe will want both books.
