About this product

Product Information

Hilarious and true-to-life, witty, compassionate, and impossible to put down, Straight Man follows Hank Devereaux through one very bad week in this novel from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Empire Falls . * Now the AMC Original Series Lucky Hank. William Henry Devereaux, Jr., is the reluctant chairman of the English department of a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt. Devereaux's reluctance is partly rooted in his character--he is a born anarchist--and partly in the fact that his department is more savagely divided than the Balkans. In the course of a single week, Devereaux will have his nose mangled by an angry colleague, imagine his wife is having an affair with his dean, wonder if a curvaceous adjunct is trying to seduce him with peach pits, and threaten to execute a goose on local television. All this while coming to terms with his philandering father, the dereliction of his youthful promise, and the ominous failure of certain vital body functions. In short, Straight Man is classic Russo--side-splitting, poignant, compassionate, and unforgettable. Look for Richard Russo's new book, Somebody's Fool , coming soon.

Reviews
"The funniest serious novel I have read since--well, maybe since Portnoy's Complaint ." -- Tom De Haven, The New York Times Book Review "There is a big, wry heart beating at the center of Russo's fiction." -- The New Yorker "[Russo] skewers academic pretensions and infighting with mad abandon...in a clear and muscular prose that is a pleasaure to read....I had to stop often to guffaw, gasp, wheeze, and wipe away my tears." -- Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times "Bursting with humor and insight." -- USA Today

  • Great book.

It made me laugh out loud. I just discovered Russo, and now he's a favorite author. "Nobody's Fool" is a hoot, too.

  • IMHO the best satire on academic life

I've spent a career as an untenured instructor at the university level. A tenured colleague recommended this book to me; I read a copy borrowed from my local public library; I had to own it. I don't consider myself a collector of books, but I can play that role. This novel is more thought-provoking than any Op-Ed piece in the Chronicle of Higher Education. I recommend it to anyone who chose an academic career to pursue the life of the mind, only to find the reality different from what was imagined. If petty politics dominate your interactions with colleagues and unfit and unbalanced students deplete the energy you devote to teaching, this book might speak to you. Ebay is the way to get this out-of-print novel! I got a copy in mint condition for less than I would have paid for a ...

  • Not My English Department!

In terms of the product, the price and condition were great. I simply did not like the way the English Department faculty was described. Russo is supposed to be a satirist, but this went flat with me. Others in our book club liked the book. So do not judge by me alone. Also: the attached picture is a part of the story.
