Reviews
It is astounding-that this book had not already been written. Synthesizing previously published studies on ancient, medieval, Renaissance, and modem perspective systems, Dunning provides a compendium of the best that has been thought and written about pictorial illusion over the past 50 years. . . . Richly persuasive and illuminating in its extended analysis of individual works as well as the overall thesis, this book belongs in every library concerned with the history of art.

  • THE book for better understanding Art history

A teacher of mine in graduate school for the MFA recommended this book- don't let that scare you though, it's not overly intellectual or pedantic. It is a fantastically well written book, and a great resource for getting a good understanding of the way space is dealt with by artists within various periods of Art. It also does a great job of discussing social climates that form the underpinnings of the way images are conceived and perceived in various times, including the present. This has become one of my top reference books for art, and one that I plan to re-read more than once.
