About this product

Product Information

HIS DARK MATERIALS IS NOW AN HBO ORIGINAL SERIES STARRING DAFNE KEEN, RUTH WILSON, ANDREW SCOTT, AND LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA! The modern fantasy classic that Entertainment Weekly named an "All-Time Greatest Novel" and Newsweek hailed as a "Top 100 Book of All Time." Philip Pullman takes readers to a world where humans have animal familiars and where parallel universes are within reach. Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steall--including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other... A masterwork of storytelling and suspense, Philip Pullman's award-winning The Golden Compass is the first in the His Dark Materials series, which continues with The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. A #1 New York Times Bestseller Winner of the Guardian Prize for Children's Fiction Published in 40 Countries "Arguably the best juvenile fantasy novel of the past twenty years." -- The Washington Post "Very grand indeed." --The New York Times "Pullman is quite possibly a genius." --Newsweek Don't miss Philip Pullman's epic new trilogy set in the world of His Dark Materials! ** THE BOOK OF DUST ** La Belle Sauvage The Secret Commonwealth

    Thought-provoking reading for all ages

It's funny how many books with weighty themes are labeled as "young reader". Pullman joins the likes of Madeleine L'Engle and Gary Paulsen and Allan W. Eckert, taking on an examination of good vs. evil. THE GOLDEN COMPASS was made into a movie in 2007, and I've heard there were plans for THE SUBTLE KNIFE and THE GOLDEN SPYGLASS as well... until the Church intervened. At any rate, I find Pullman's writing to be thought-provoking, entertaining, and an interesting twist, especially in our current chaotic times.

  • Excellent book.

I read this book when I was in about the 6th grade, and although I made it through, I wasn't old enough to completely grasp the intense plot. I finished reading it again a few days ago (I'm in college now) and this book is far better than when I first read it, and I now consider it one of my favorites. The plot is very engaging, and really holds the readers' interest, it is very difficult to put this book down once you start. Definitely a good choice for fans of Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and other fantasy fiction authors. Also if you like video games, this book reminds me a lot of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and other high quality RPG games. This is not a children's book, I wouldn't recommend it to preteens, it might even be best to wait until ...

  • The Most Important Book Series For Young Readers

Love, adventure, intrigue, sin, religion, coming of age and the nature of your soul - important themes in this book that will open your heart to lessons and realizations like no other book. Pullman crafts a world filled with characters you will love, envy, hate, and fear. The "His Dark Materials" series is highly important for young readers between the ages of 12 and 20.

  • The Golden Compass Trilogy better than the movie

Bought books because i liked the movie. movie was faithful to volume one up to the end. The other two volumes tell the rest of the story. Exciting, fast paced story. Fun to read for all ages. Adult will recognize the deeper, thought provoking story underneath. Well worth your time to read it all.
