About this product

Product Information

Beatrice Lacey, as strong-minded as she is beautiful, refuses to conform to the social customs of her time. Destined to lose her family name and beloved Wideacre estate once she is wed, Beatrice will use any means necessary to protect her ancestral heritage. Seduction, betrayal, even murder -- Beatrice's passion is without apology or conscience. "She is a Lacey of Wideacre," her father warns, "and whatever she does, however she behaves, will always be fitting." Yet even as Beatrice's scheming seems about to yield her dream, she is haunted by the one living person who knows the extent of her plans...and her capacity for evil.Sumptuously set in Georgian England, Wideacre is intensely gripping, rich in texture, and full of color and authenticity. It is a saga as irresistible in its singular magic as its heroine.

Big change from her other works

I read The Other Boleyn Girl and then proceeded to read every P. Gregory novel I could get my hands on. Each one that centered on historical characters was beautiful. Well written and delightful to read. This book was all about incestuous lovers. I couldn't relate to the characters. Worse I couldn't even care about the characters. It became hard to read...so much so that after reading the first couple of chapters of the second book I am putting it down. Half price here I come.

  • Well! My goodness!

Well! I'm glad I read Philippa's Tudor series before I read this book, or I probably never would have read another book by her! She is, here as always, a graceful, engaging author who keeps you hooked. But this book should come with a warning label! I'm an open-minded reader, but by the end of this tale the incest has gone from shocking to just gross, and pointless. There were so many other ways to stay home! How about just asking? And while I did find myself engrossed in the story, I also found it repetitive. I found myself skimming pages, muttering "you love Wideacre, we get it." I need to care about my characters to truly enjoy a good read, and Beatrice and her pals have no redeeming qualities. Celia is unbelievably naive, Harry is an idiot, and the good doctor is a coward. ...

  • Wideacre

Ok, This book is a slightly unusual read for me. I love historical romances and this one is well written. The only thing I didn't like was the very descriptive incest topic. This heroin is very strong and does EVERYTHING in her power to retain her family home. I do understand that back in those times the only real thing a woman had to "bargain with" was her body. I just felt dirty thinking the thoughts that she had knowing they were about her brother. I guess it's all up to the reader. Definately not a good read for a teen or a victim of molestation!

  • Wideacre

This book is like Gone With the Wind but on steroids. I was hooked the moment I read the first page. It is loaded with passion, violence(at times), and intrigue. And like Scarlett, the heroine, Beatrice, just can't seem to get it right. She is both fascinating and repulsive at the same time. The authors writing style is engaging and descritive but don't look for a hollywood ending here. This is a great curl-up by the fire read but not for the faint of heart! This is the first book in a series of three. In my opinion, it is the best. Happy Reading!
