  • DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MISS THIS FILM!

THE RED HOUSE (1947): Starring Edward G. Robinson, Judith Anderson, Lon McCallister, Allene Roberts, Julie London, Rory Calhoun. One of the greatest, most haunting of all film noir offerings from the 40s, which I first chanced upon as a child, and which, by now I must have eagerly watched half a dozen times. Guilt-ridden Pete Morgan (Robinson) harbors a terrifying secret centered around an accursed red house, hidden deep within the haunted woods on which his farm is located. Evocative score (especially the tender "rustic theme") provided by the late brilliant Miklos Rozsa (BEN-HUR, KING OF KINGS, EL CID, SPELLBOUND), etc.). Although the qualify of both the tape and DVD is unfortunately not up to par -- this is one film begging for restoration -- I regard THE RED HOUSE ...

  • Great old movie find!

The Red House, starring Edward G. Robinson, was adapted from a 1943 book by George Agnew Chamberlain. If you like 1940's well done B&W movies, when hollywood produced some of it's best work, you will not be disappointed in the Red House. Good story line, great old mystery. I first saw this movie over 50 years ago and it has become one of my favorite old movies. I am happy to have found a copy on DVD as it is rarely shown on TV. One thing I would like to mention is the minor stratches in the original film version of this movie. I would guess that a good original copy of the Red House would be somewhat rare. This would explain the minor imperfections in this DVD. This is nothing to worry about and does not distract from the movie experience.

  • Vintage film with plot resembling a Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys mystery.

This black and white movie is very dated, with a grainy film quality. But it still held my interest, mostly due to the performance of Edward G. Robinson. As played by Robinson, there is definitely something creepy about farmer Pete Morgan. But when he warns his adopted daughter Meg to stay out of the woods, citing a haunted house, it is not immediately obvious whether he is genuinely terrified by the screams he claims emanate from the red house, or if he has an evil ulterior motive. His obsession with the red house has the opposite effect on Meg and farm hand Nate; they are curious and decide to investigate. The teenagers prove braver and more resourceful than the adults when it comes to solving the mystery. Though most modern viewers would not consider this a horror film (no gore), ...

  • The Red House is just as suspenseful as I remember.

It is what I remember watching as a little girl at my grandma’s house She was the on family member that had a television set.

  • See why the young couple can't go deep into the woods!

I 😘 ved the old black and white shadows and lighting. Edward G. Robinson is in my opinion fantastic in every role he's ever been in. This film was filled with loads of suspense for that period in time. If you enjoy the old but goody professionals, this is one to see.
