About this product

Product Information

An original and groundbreaking examination of the psychological devastation of war through the lens of Homer's Iliad in this "compassionate book [that] deserves a place in the lasting literature of the Vietnam War" ( The New York Times ). In this moving and dazzlingly creative book, Dr. Jonathan Shay examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer's Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. A classic of war literature that has as much relevance as ever in the wake of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Achilles in Vietnam is a "transcendent literary adventure" ( The New York Times ) and "clearly one of the most original and most important scholarly works to have emerged from the Vietnam War" (Tim O'Brien, author of The Things They Carried ). As a Veterans Affairs psychiatrist, Shay encountered devastating stories of unhealed PTSD and uncovered the painful paradox--that fighting for one's country can render one unfit to be a citizen. With a sensitive and compassionate examination of the battles many Vietnam veterans continue to fight, Shay offers readers a greater understanding of PTSD and how to alleviate the potential suffering of soldiers. Although the Iliad was written twenty-seven centuries ago, Shay shows how it has much to teach about combat trauma, as do the more recent, compelling voices and experiences of Vietnam vets. A groundbreaking and provocative monograph, Achilles in Vietnam takes readers on a literary journey that demonstrates how we can learn how war damages the mind and spirit, and work to change those things in our culture that so that we don't continue repeating the same mistakes.

  • Achilles in Vietnam by Jonathan Shay (1995)

This book is an eye opener for all who lived through this war and those who only have heard about it. I feel that anyone who reads at bedtime before going to sleep would want to reconsider reading this book at that time, as I found this book so graphic that it caused me to not be able to close my eyes and sleep. So vivid in descriptions...and yet what the reader has to remember is this book includes only accounts of actual events and happenings. No one should have to endure such trauma as war brings to the human soul. The book is one that everyone should read just to be reminded that wars must cease and to appreciate the American veteran and military men with hearts of intense gratitude for all these men and women sustain in combat.

  • Hits the Vietnam Vets Problems Right on the Head!.

It Reveals the True Trauma of Military Combat and it’s effects!. If you are a Vietnam Combat Veteran, like me, and Diagnosed with PTSD, Depression, and a lot more, and VA Combat Disabled like me , as far as today’s Problems you can see the exact Resemblance. I have bought extra Copies to give to my VA Psychologist and PTSD Therapists!. I don’t know a lot about Achilles, but learned from this Book!

  • Everyone should read this

Though written in 1994 the content and insights remain relevant. As our Vietnam veterans are all elderly and dying, this will give the reader a new appreciation and regard for the suffering brought about by their service. I also wonder about the relevance to our current veterans who have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

  • Excellent Vietnam war book

This book details the war from a soldier’s point of view. In addition, it compares that war to Homer’s great poem about war, The Odyssey. Very interesting at every page.
