NOASB - RSV
The RSV based NOASB, ecummenical edition, is an excellent introduction to the deutero-canonical books, as used by the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches. This in a translation that has proved accurate, and readable to the modern English reader, while preserving the dignity and majesty of Elizabethian English that those who still read the KJV so appreciate. Herbert May, and Bruce Metzger feature as editors of this edition of the RSV; their formidable intellect and experise are clear in this edition. The notes, while sometimes brief, are nonetheless apt and useful. Though all study Bibles suffer at least some level of interpretation of the text, based on the inherent bias of the editor(s, this NOASB is remarkably free of any theological, or denominational, bias. Conservative critics of the RSV should take note that this edition goes to pains to stress, not only the divinity of Christ, but His fulfillment of the OT prophecies concerning Him. Left of center readers will readily appreciate the lack of emphasis of pre-millenial theology in the study notes. Though this does get mention in the notes, the reader is left to his or her own bias in this matter. Catholic and Orthodox readers should appreciate thie edition for much the same reasons that protestants do, with the added qualification of the full range of deutero-canonical books. The notes here, too, are first-rate, and are particularly useful to the reader with no prior exposure to the apocryphal books. All in all, the RSV has proven to be a durable and reliable translation, and the annotated study Bible by Oxford that is based on it is still almost without peer. This reviewer rates this study Bible as a "must have" for any serious Bible student.
