Product Information

NOW THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONES --THE MASTERPIECE THAT BECAME A CULTURAL PHENOMENON Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse--unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen's brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister--the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms. Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki--whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

A Song of Ice and Fire Game of Thrones Book 1

This book is only the beginning. I have watched the HBO Series and have loved every minute of it. I wanted to know more details of these character so I began reading the books. The characters and story line are wonderful. And the heart-wrenching deaths of some of the most beloved will keep you on edge. Do you mourn? Do you plot revenge? Do you begin to feel something dark festering within and are you shocked you could feel such a way? Must read series.

  • Good but not a masterpiece

When I read that Martin's Song of Ice and Fire was even better than the "Sword of Truth" and "Wheel of Time" Series, I was certainly intrigued. I must say that the first book was enjoyable, but in comparison to the first volumes of the other two series: "Wizard's First Rule" and "Eye of the World", a Game of Thrones was a bit tedious to me. The characters really didn't seem overly inspired. I did really enjoy the children, especially Arya and Sansa's stories. The villains were a bit enjoyable too. Especially the Hound. But the other adults seemed almost cookie cutter fantasy roles. And while enjoyable, did not really interest me. The series is better written than Goodkind's Sword of Truth and a bit less descriptive than Jordan's Wheel of Time, but the author seemed to rely too heavily ...

  • Excellente novel. Great product.

George Martin bring us a complete experience with this series of books called the A Song of Fire and Ice. His first book, Games of Thrones is well written and an excellent start for this saga. Is easy to read because Martin focuses in how situation are observed under different characters across the book. This makes even easier to read because you don't have to read like 30 pages to finish the chapter, just read until one of the characters finished his/her point of view (POW). Epic fantasy is subtle, but is there to the joy of those who like it. Maybe Martin is the modern Tolkein, because he gives to the reader exactly what we want: a detailed story about a kingdom, their lineage and a complete world to explore and live the fantasy. Excellent purchase. Don't expect less from Martin or this ...

  • intelligent but gratuitous

Bring a notebook to keep track of your theories of where the plot is going -- it'll be worth it. Bring a shovel to dig through all the stupidity -- you'll need it. Martin falls into a trap in his Song of Ice and Fire series. At first, the brutality -- both in actions and in choice of words -- makes the war seem real. Yes, midieval-fantasy-world soldiers would use words like cock and shit and piss and cunt all the time. However, when I see the queen talking the same way, it shows me that the whole thing is a trick. Yes, soldiers will act like soldiers, but this series makes it look like all most men ever want to do is loot villages and rape women, whether they're in the middle of a war or not. Now I'm as big a fan of sex and violence as the next person, but Martin seems to think that ...

  • Awesome in every way

George R. R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series is about the best fantasy series I have ever read, and I have read a lot of books in this category. The characters are very well developed, complex and believable. It makes you wish you could meet them (some because you hate them and others because you love them.) The way he describes the environment, the customs of the people, all of it seems exactly as if he looked back in time to a medieval period and just described what he saw. There are a lot of gruesome descriptions of war and killing and all that, but also a lot of humor mixed in. Everyone should read all the books in the series... each one is better than the last, and personally I can't wait for the next one to be published!
