  • 1989 the film adaptation to buy, not the atrocious 2012 version.

My rating applies to the earlier c. 1989 movie, not the later one. The 1989 version should be re-released on dvd. I paid a high price on ebay for a used copy and am delighted I did. One of the finest haunting films ever made. Avoid completely the one made c. 2012 dvd, which radically changed the story and misses the mark so much (constant close-ups of faces, but not many long shots to enable one to see the context and savor the setting). If one insists upon buying the 2012 version, take the money and burn it, thus saving time and annoyance with the abominable 2012. The earlier version is well-filmed and captures atmosphere well, even the characters and atmosphere one might have found in post WW I Britain (much local color). I did not even donate my 2012 copy to a thrift ...

  • Classic, old-fashioned British frightener

This made-for TV movie is a classic. My wife and I saw it for the first time on Christmas Eve 1989, and it gave us the creeps far more than we expected. A wonderful, M. R. James-like plot (based on a beautifully written book of the same name by Susan Hill), a script written by Nigel Kneale of Quatermass fame, a great cast, and lots, and lots, and lots of shadows, fog and apparitional spookery will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. If you like atmospheric, post World War I British drama or if you just like having the bits scared off you, this is one you should not miss.

  • The Woman in Black (DVD, 2000)

This creepy thriller is one of the longest running plays in London. The entire London show is an excercise in minimalization with only three actors involved. Quite to the contrary this video leaves little to the imagination with creative cinematography and realisttic rather than contrived special effects. Your kids will have nightmares. You, well you might not be able to sleep...at all.

  • The Woman in Black 2000, DVD

I saw this title on stage a few years ago in manchester so I decided to buy the DVD to see how film would deal with an original stage script. The themes and issues throughout were dealt with brilliantly and I would reccommend this title as a must-see for anyone who is not immediately scared by the aspect of anything supernatural...(my sister is and she hated it!!) Cannot praise it more highly.

  • A 'Scary' Classic film!

This is a great thriller and I consider a 'real Classic' in the catagory of a 'non-violent' horror films.
