Atragon
A not-to-bad Japanese movie in the Godzilla sense. Like most of those movies, the plot can be somewhat disjointed and illogical, but if you can get past that, it's a pretty good ride. The models used in the movie look very good, and the special effects are good for this era. Like I mentioned, there are some odd things from a scientific perspective (an underwater freeze ray?) plus the idea of a huge underwater empire declaring war on the surface world for some reason that was never really explained. But I can let all that go and enjoy this flick. The video quality of the DVD was very good.A not-to-bad Japanese movie in the Godzilla sense. Although some would consider this film a little kitzy by today's standards please remember when it was done. At that time it was state of the art and by some of today's standards it is still quite good. In any case, it's fun to watch and is very typical of the films of the Godzilla gendre. The baddys are very bad and the good guys are out to save the world. Amazingly it deals also in a round about way with some controversial aspects of our conflict with Japan long ago. All in all its a great family film and will be fun to watch someday with the grandkids to see what they think of it. Atragon is still as I remember it, one kicking submarine, that I could only hope someone will someday build as a world peacekeeping vehicle. A good film for Toho Studios with a plot that would repeat itself throughout Toho's other releases. The undersea kingdom of Mu seeks to conquer Earth's surface world by using its advanced weapons and Manda, a dragon-like sea serpent who would re-appear in a handful of future Godzilla movies. Only a WWII era Japanese naval officer can battle against the forces of Mu using his top secret submarine, The Atragon. Manda doesn't get a lot of screen time and the inhabitants of Mu are annoying but this rare Toho film is a pre-cursor to a lot of Toho's future films where inhabitants of other planets and undersea kingdoms would seek to conquer the Earth. Mighty Japanese science fiction!
It's a great film with the original (slightly incompetent) dubbing into English. Imagine the old TV series "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" given a huge budget. The submarine is much bigger, it can fly (?) and has a built-in burrowing drill. It also has dozens of Japanese soldiers hidden since the end of World War II who have been training and building this sub in secret. Just the perfect vehicle and crew to stop the evil Mu Empire, with their legions of tribal dancers and their big underwater snake god Manda. (Oh, Manda, you came and you gave without taking...)It's a great film with the original (slightly incompetent) dubbing into English. A classic Creature/Feature from the 60's!!
This wonderful B-movie classic is set in the same mold as the early Godzilla movies. Same special effects- meaning the same masterful construction of miniature Toyko city sets, the same sound track and music score, and the same bad english dubbing. Oddly, master story-teller Honda couldn't decide if this was to be a detective movie or a Earth vs the Aliens movie. For half the movie our heros run around the Japanese countryside hunting the bad guys, but the final big battle with the giant dragon Manda lasts 35 seconds.
