Product Information

The Blue Ridge Parkway began as a dream in the late 1800s and became reality in 1983 when the 469-mile scenic highway was completed. Construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began in September 1935 at Cumberland Knob. Heavy construction was done by contractors who won bids for the different projects along various sections of the parkway. Civilian Conservation Corps troops took care of the roadsides, landscaping, and structure building. As part of Franklin Roosevelts New Deal, this project was intended to provide jobs throughout the region. Images of America: Building the Blue Ridge Parkway contains approximately 200 construction photographs of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

    Good but not worth the retail price if you are interested in the actual engineering and building processes.

    Saw this book while on tour of the BRP but found the content to be less than desirable for the asking price. I later found it as a used book for a lot less $. It is interesting but lacks content on the actual building of the parkway and focuses more on the political and societal aspects of the project, insofar as I have read to date.

    Recommended

    Wonderful pictorial history of the parkway that took over 50 years to complete. While the history could have been laid out in a more chronological order, and more backstory told, the photos are the real prize, showing how difficult it was to to make this magnificent highway through the mountains. if you have not driven it, GO!
