About this product

Product Information

From its pre-Colonial origins to the hustle and bustle of today, Billerica has remained a thriving village with something for everyone. Surrounded by lakes, rivers, and footpaths that became the building blocks of the state's road system, Billerica's history reflects the growth trends of a young nation--a history steeped in courage, independence, prosperity, and celebration. Originally the Shawshin Wilderness, the fledgling settlement took the name Billerica and was incorporated as a town in 1655. The territory initially included lands that would become parts of Bedford, Tewksbury, Wilmington, and Carlisle. For the next three centuries, farmers, weavers, merchants, millers, and craftsmen sought out Billerica for its agricultural opportunity, potential waterpower, recreational attractions, and strategic travel routes.

Title: Using postcards to display Billerica's history Author: Carla Agostino Publisher: Billerica Minuteman Date: 9/29/2010 Billerica's history is now depicted through a collection of postcards in David D'Apice's new book "Billerica." Published by Arcadia Publishing, "Billerica," which went on sale Sept. 13, is the most recent edition of the Postcard History Series. It is on sale through Arcadia's website, Amazon.com and other regional booksellers. D'Apice is a former Billerica resident and vice president of the Billerica Historical Society and now lives in Boxford with his wife and two children. He has been intrigued with history since he was a teenager and said he was initially attracted to Billerica because of its history and it architecture. Over the last decade he has owned and restored historical properties in the center of Billerica. The Billerica Alliance is sponsoring an upcoming book signing with D'Apice on Oct. 5 at the Enterprise Bank in Pinehurst from 5 to 7 p.m. D'Apice will also be at the Barnes and Noble in Burlington on Oct. 7. Q When and how did you decide to embark on creating the book "Billerica"? A Well, I lived in Billerica for about 20 years and I collected a large collection of photos, postcards and memorabilia from Billerica's past and when I moved away from town about four years ago I wanted to find a way to continue to share my historical collection with the people, so that gave rise to the idea of publishing a book. I was involved in publishing an Arcadia book for the Historical Society and it was very well received and the publisher always said to me 'anytime you are interested in writing another one we are very much interested in doing it.' It was an open door for me. As I began to archive my material, I felt like it was too good to put it way, I really wanted to get it out to the public. Q Could you describe the entire process, from start to finish? How much time did you spend? A The first thing that I did was to take a round robin of my inventory. The book is 80 percent postcards by definition so a lot of my early documents and photographs, I had to go through them and prioritize what I had and then I had to identify sort of chapters and groupings of like things. I have a chapter on homes and businesses. I had too much material so I had to go through and sort of weed out until I got to the page count to comply with the publisher. It took about a year. By the time you select out what you want you sort of weed it out. Then you have to do some research on each, you identify its date, some of them have stamps, you do a bit of detective work, that can be very rewarding. Q What were your goals when compiling this book? Did you intend on displaying a particular message or theme through the pictures? A My major goal was to share my collection with the people of Billerica and surrounding towns. One of the major premises of the book was to appeal Billerica to the tourists. I guess what my hope was that when people see what a beautiful and interesting place it was, its industrial roots, its social revolution, the more people see that the more people can see the potential Billerica has. The more you learn about it the more informed you are to make decisions about the future. You learn about people who lived before you that had the same struggles that you do, the same chances to shape the community. Q Having been involved with Billerica's Historical Society in the past, could you explain your role during that time? A I was the vice president of the Historical Society during the time of Billerica's 350th anniversary, which was a really great adventure for its history. It was a great celebr
