  • Typical Teen Novel

This book has a witty, fast-moving style and begins with an excellent premise: two geeky girls make the high school cheerleading squad. To their surprise, they don't instantly become popular. In fact, the popular kids harass them and laugh at them. Their geek friends consider them traitors. I was interested; finally, a teen novel that tells it like it is! But no, the ending was typical teen romance: after practice and perseverance, Bethany and Moni become competent cheerleaders and both land the handsome, popular athlete boyfriends of their dreams AND regain the respect of their geek pals. Yes, it would be nice if we could have it all, but in real life it probably wouldn't turn out that way.
