About this product

Product Information

Take an expertly guided tour of Boston's historic landmarks and epic past. Follow the history of the Boston Marathon and the architectural gems that grace the Copley Square/Back Bay area where the race ends. Take a deep dive into the subway dig. Learn how fabled landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted figured out how to put a salt marsh inside the city to prevent flooding, paving the way for today's green ribbon of parks. Interwoven with anecdotes about landmarks such as the Boston Common, the Boston Red Sox Fenway Park, and the Esplanade are observations about the character of a city that took the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing in stride. Perfect for both armchair reading and for use as a unique visitors' guide.

Reviews
In Ted Clark's new book "Building Boston," it is almost as if I am taking an armchair tour of the city I know so well. The book, published by Schiffer Puiblishing, and subtitled 'Stories of Architectural and Engineering Feats' make for fascinating reading from Copley Square, in essence the epicenter of Boston, through the Back Bay, Fenway and Esplanade of Boston, all the while illustrating the rich text with both vintage photographs as well as contemporary ones.Clarke adroitly explains the career of "fabled landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted [who] figured out how to put a salt marsh inside the city to prevent flooding, paving the way for today's green ribbon of parks" and thereby transforming the mashes of the Back Bay into a residential, institutional and ecclesiastical mélange that was the quintessential Bog Big of 19th century America. With the use of 19th century maps, the book illustrates Boston's massive infill project and how this 'man-made land' transformed the peninsular settled by the Puritans in 1630.I was amazed at the large quantity of photographs, some stunning images provided by the author, of the city but the book is just the right size to take on a stroll through Boston while reading the chapters, let along sitting in a comfortable armchair in the comfort of one's home. I highly recommend Ted Clark's new book "Building Boston." You won't be disappointed.Anthony Sammarco, noted historian and author of over sixty books
