About this product

Product Information

A fascinating and comprehensive look into the life of American fashion designer Ralph Lauren, now with an afterword. "Deep-dish...sharp-clawed...honestly admiring."--New York Times There are at least two Ralph Laurens. To the public he's a gentle, modest, yet secure and purposeful man. Inside the walls of Polo Ralph Lauren, though, he was long seen by some as a narcissist, an insecure ditherer, and, at times, a rampaging tyrant. Michael Gross, author of the bestsellers Model and 740 Park, lays bare the truths of this fashion emperor's rise, and reveals not only the secrets of his meteoric success in marketing our shared fantasies, but also a widely unknown side that's behind the designer's chic façade.

  • Odd Guy

RL is an odd guy. Sometimes this author likes and admires him and at other times he is vengeful. Too much time is spent on what person had what position and when. No pictures of the clothes or home furnishings which would have helped a lot. It still is a fascinating American success story, personalities aside.

  • An Inauthentic Biography

As a voracious reader with a great appreciation of biography and autobiography, I was looking forward to this portrait of the accomplished American designer of fashion and home. I'm familiar with Ralph Lauren's work and with his philanthropy. He's a Horatio Alger story with a strong work ethic and he is a family man. So let's dig deeper. Michael Gross doesn't seem to have a bone to pick, more like a dagger to stick. I've read some of his previous work which seemed to be nothing but tabloid journalism in hardcover. This biography takes the cake in it's hatefulness of Ralph Lauren the man, the brand, the myth. Rather than being investigative and revealing it is simply bitter. We are all flawed but there is nothing authentic about a hate campaign marketed as a biography.

  • Genuine Authentic by Michael Gross

I bought this book to gain an understanding of Ralph Lauren's incredible journey in America. It was not disappointed. It included the good, the bad, and the ugly. In the end, I believe it relieved an incredibly gutsy, daring human being who flew into skies unknow just because he thought he could.
