Notes
After the enthusiastic reception that met The Who in Leeds on February 14, 1970, the band drove the 50 miles southeast to the North Sea port of Hull for the following evenings show. LIVE AT HULL is a warts-and-all document that strange popping sound noticeable at times is the sound of Keith Moons frenzied drumstick attack making contact with the overhead mic. There is the odd botched cue and at one point during "Tommy" Pete gets crackling interference from his guitar amp. But after four decades of being neglected it's a document to savor, capturing The Who at their performing pinnacle and is presented here near enough to complete for the first time ever.

  • IMO, The 2nd Greatest Rock Recording Ever Made!

I and most Who fans have always considered Live at Leeds as the best live rock recording we ever heard, but Roger Dautrey, in his recently autobiographical release, states that he think the recording from Hull is superior because the instrument volume was more controlled and he didn't have to "over sing". So I had to give it an assessment. Overall, I think I respectfully disagree with Roger. I don't see that much difference in the quality of the vocal recorded, and some of Pete Townsend's "wanderings" on lead guitar are, IMO, not as good as the "cleaned up and powerful" Leeds recording. However, there are segments that ARE superior to the Leeds recording, and you need to hear this! It's amazing how four guys can play this fast and with such precision. Tommy is presented in it's ...

  • .a great buy for any Who fan...so get it...you won't be sorry on bit...

I had read and heard really good reviews and anticipated the same upon hearing " Live At Hull " and was not one bit disappointed... I have worn out several copies of " Live At Leeds " over the years (I purchased it when it first was released) and it is an excellent representation of The Who at that period...I have to say that " Live At Hull " is even better...the chops are right on the mark in both...I find that "Hull" is much cleaner sonically...and more complete as it includes the whole of "Tommy"...a great buy for any Who fan...so get it...you won't be sorry on bit...sadly...at present not available on vinyl....one can only hope...

  • Raw and exciting WHO!

Great performance...as raw and vital as any of the best Who performances! One funny thing is I never saw this in my area on the original release year? Get it while you can!

  • Driving guitar, maniacal drumming, good vocals, and no chit-chat makes this the best Tommy performance in my opinion.

I have the Live in Leeds recording and the Isle of Wight recording as well. I would rate the Live at Hull recording as superior to both of these. While the sound quality might be 95% of the sound quality of the Live at Leeds, the band was absolutely inspired, and it was very high energy. The only thing I would say is that Roger's voice may not be as rich as in the Isle of Wight, the driving guitar riffs and drumming more than make up for Roger being not quite up to the level on Isle of Wight. Also, the editor did not include all the chit-chat between songs to the crowd, and that really makes Side 1 (non-Tommy portion) work 10 times better. (I honestly rarely listened to the non-Tommy section of Leeds and Wight because of all the chit-chat, but with the uninterrupted music and inspired ...
