    A trackball is a matter of personal taste

    The Logitech Trackman T-RA18 is no longer in production - replaced by the M570. My preference is for the T-RA18 because it feels more responsive to the settings in Mouse Properties and is smoother where small moves of the cursor are needed. I can't compare it to other brands of trackballs, since I've only used Logitech trackball mice. But as personal experience goes, I like it a lot and I'm comfortable with the side-ball position. It's really a matter of personal taste, when it comes down to it.
