A middle-aged spinster (Jane Fonda) decides to escape her cloistered New England life by taking a job as a governess in Mexico. There she falls in love with a passionate young general fighting in Pancho Villa's army, while at the same time finding herself drawn to a mysterious, aging American man. The American turns out to be the journalist Ambrose Bierce (Gregory Peck), who disappeared in Mexico in 1913. The three characters become enmeshed in a love triangle that plays itself out against the dramatic backdrop of the Mexican Revolution. Based on Carlos Fuentes' novel.

OLD GRINGO (DVD, 2000) Gregory Peck / Jane Fonda
This is a slightly better than mediocre movie with a good cast. Gregory Peck only adds to the quality of this film, as few actors could. He plays the 60+ year old writer, Ambrose Bierce, who suddenly realizes after a lifetime of writing volumes of romance novels, that his entire body of work, although loved by many, amounts to meaningless dribble. He drops out and heads for revolutionary Mexico to find himself. Here he meets Jane Fonda, who's character, Harriet Winslow, is also running away from a guilt ridden past. Both she and her mother have been living the lie of being surviving dependents of a soldier who supposedly died in Cuba fifteen years earlier in the Spanish-American War. A three way love triangle develops between Oroyo, Harriet Winslow, and the old writer. The rest of the movie is a predictable "Chic Flick" and doesn't leave much to question. Not a bad movie. Some beautiful scenery along with a really beautiful acoustic guitar musical score.

If there were a 0/0 rating, this would be it. Jane Fonda and Gregory Peck should be ashamed that they were in this movie! It has an absolutely ridiculous plot, and I could not wait for it to be over. I was looking for a love story between these two beloved Hollywood actors in a setting known for romance. Instead, all that I got was a drunk Gregory Peck not knowing why he was there, and a Jane Fonda who was running away from something right into the hands of a Mexican Civil War which was never explained. Fans of Jimmy Smits will also be turned off. This movie is terrible!If there were a 0/0 rating, this would be it. Jane Fonda and Gregory Peck should be ashamed that they were in this movie! It was great to be able to obtain this move from the early 1980s....love the history in it. I couldn't find it in video shops so ebay was the way to go.
