Not what I expected; not at a child's level.

It is not what I expected. This is for someone (an adult) who wants to TEACH; not at a child's level which I expected. I thought a child could look at this book and it would give examples on a child's level of how to draw certain things. This is a book on art theory and how to teach it.

  • Not what I expected by the name

Our 4th child is high-functioning Autistic, along with many other issues. He's very artistic and detailed. With this in mind, and by the description I had read on this book, I thought it would pretty much be laid out for us in step-by-step form where we could just jump into the book and enjoy it. However, being the type who like to do things "by the rules", I flipped through the book from the front to the back and by the time I reached what I thought might interest my Son, I felt I would have already lost his interest as he is not one for much reading and quite honestly, I don't have the time to do tons of research on one book before I can use it with him. I'm keeping the book on the shelf for now, in hopes I will find the time to research it more, others can't be wrong when they say ...

  • comprehensive and simple beginners drawing book. Teaches you how to "see", not just memorize rules!

Really enjoy the subject matter in this book. Very comprehensive for beginners learning to draw. Super simple for kids and beginning adults alike as she breaks down the basic shapes of drawing and gives several lessons to reinforce the information. My husband, daughter and I are very excited to journey through this book together. Arrived in PERFECT condition. Looks brand new.

  • I can't draw and this book has helped!

I am a homeschooling mother of 4. I am not an artist by any stretch of the imagination. This book is great for teaching children, teenagers or even yourself how to get to the basics of drawing. From there the author clearly explains many hands on exercises that can bring you to a new level of drawing with some practice.

  • Everybody needs to read this book!

This book is truly amazing. From the cover artwork, which was drawn by a child of five years, to the techniques that they detail for you, this book proves that ANYBODY can be an artist. It can be used as a beginner's book for adults or a book for teaching children. I purchased it to use in homeschooling my son, and when I began reading it I was surprised to find that they recommend that *I* read through it first and overcome any blocks or issues I have with art before I ever start working through it with a child. I was shocked at how much emotion came up when I started reading it on my own. I didn't realize how many bad experiences and negative feelings I'd had connected with "failing" at art! I'm so excited to do this with my son and see his progress.
