Product Information

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - "Extremely funny . . . inspired lunacy . . . and] over much too soon."-- The Washington Post Book World Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor. Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod's girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he's bought over the years. Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars Praise for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "A whimsical oddyssey . . . Characters frolic through the galaxy with infectious joy." -- Publishers Weekly "Irresistable " -- The Boston Globe

Reviews
Don't panic! Here are words of praise for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! "It's science fiction and it's extremely funny...inspired lunacy that leaves hardly a science fiction cliche alive." Washington Post "The feckless protagonist, Arthur Dent, is reminiscent of Vonnegut heroes, and his travels afford a wild satire of present institutions." Chicago Tribune "Very simply, the book is one of the funniest SF spoofs ever written, with hyperbolic ideas folding in on themselves." School Library Journal "As parody, it's marvelous: It contains just about every science fiction cliche you can think of. As humor, it's, well, hysterical."

  • Inspired Genius!

It hardly needs to be mentioned that Douglas Adams was a genius. His stories are so well crafted, and his literary style so unique, that his books can be read over and over again with total enjoyment..which is exactly why I recommend this and any of his other works to everyone. This audio version is perfect for listening on the go. Plus, it's unabridged, which is essential for any Adams work because you don't want to miss a word. Narrator Stephen Fry does a fine job here, although I do prefer versions of the Hitchhikers series done by Adams himself. This CD audio book is a good one to start with if you want to get into the Hitchhikers's series. You will be hooked.

  • An excellent rendition of hitchhikers guide. Highly recommended

This book is a real classic and deservedly so as one of the most fun books I've ever read. I would highly recommend giving this a shot. The book still stands up very well after all these years and is a whole lot of fun to hear. A great story well told.

  • Douglas Adams and Stephen Fry how good can it get!
