Product Information

The magical saga of the women behind King Arthur's throne. "A monumental reimagining of the Arthurian legends . . . reading it is a deeply moving and at times uncanny experience. . . . An impressive achievement."-- The New York Times Book Review In Marion Zimmer Bradley's masterpiece, we see the tumult and adventures of Camelot's court through the eyes of the women who bolstered the king's rise and schemed for his fall. From their childhoods through the ultimate fulfillment of their destinies, we follow these women and the diverse cast of characters that surrounds them as the great Arthurian epic unfolds stunningly before us. As Morgaine and Gwenhwyfar struggle for control over the fate of Arthur's kingdom, as the Knights of the Round Table take on their infamous quest, as Merlin and Viviane wield their magics for the future of Old Britain, the Isle of Avalon slips further into the impenetrable mists of memory, until the fissure between old and new worlds' and old and new religions' claims its most famous victim.

Great read if you like historical fiction, fantasy, and fairies that don't flit around.

This is a classic. I read it years ago, and wanted to experience it again. Purchase price was outrageously low. This is a BIG book, easy to read, a must for Tolkien fans. Almost as magical as Harry Potter. Of course, it is King Arthur and Avalon, not Hogwarts.

  • Mists of Avalon--fascinating reading

The Mists of Avalon was one of those books that I couldn't put down. The author has a way of making the book so engrossing that you must keep reading. It is a fascinating study of the old religion versus the new religion through the lives of the legendary characters of King Author, Queen Guinevere, Morgaine, and many more. As a Christian, I could not agree with the pagan values of Morgaine. In particular, the common practice of giving up their children for other people to foster seems cold-hearted to me. However, the idea that people may do as they wish without the restrictions of the morals of Christianity helped me understand why it was so hard for the ancient Britains to totally give up their religion. Nature worship, blood sacrifices, fertility rites, etc. appeal to the baser ...

  • The book that started it all

This is the tale to beat all tales. A tale of legends and magick. For anyone who loves the tales of Avalon and King Arthur, this books time has come. The first book to tell the tales of this long ago time through the eyes and hearts of the women who lived it. Masterfully written this tale not only shows that Morrgaine was NOT evil, it shows the way that the powers that be can corrupt, regardless of intentions. This tale will break your heart, make your heart sing with joy and will give you unbridled hope for the way that things should be. I could not put the book down! I had surgery and was about 1/4 of the way through the book and once I woke up from surgery all I wanted to do was finish my book! I spent all night in the hospital reading! I am so very glad that this book was ...
