Unnamable II Statement of Randolph Carter. OneTrueTroy
Unnamable II, released in 1992, is the sequel to Unnamable which was released in 1988. Jean-Paul Ouellette directed both movies and wrote the screenplays based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft. As a fan of H.P. Lovecraft fiction, I enjoy the curiosity, paranoia and palpable fear of the main characters. Even though the stories are obviously works of fiction, the characters (whether major or minor) primarily behave as if they are real people. They investigate, ask questions, seek out experts and do sensible research. The characters in Unnamable II give you that impression, then the humor and slapstick takes away the suspension of disbelief. Directors and writers don't always have the last word and the movie script may have been influenced by other producers or even by the ... Regardless of the lack of realism of some of the scenes, dialog and final ending (no more sequels) Mark Kinsey Stephenson portrays the character of Randolph Carter brilliantly in this movie as well as the first film. He deliberately ignores the surrounding silliness and remains true to the way H.P. Lovecraft imagines the players that are full of intelligence and wit. John Rhys-Davies delivers an excellent performance as Professor Warren and I was disappointed with his short role in the film. Charles Klausmeyer reprises his role as Howard Damon and remains true to his character in the first film with pragmatism and sheer disbelief and terror when facing that which is unnatural. The creature is portrayed by Julie Strain and is unsettling to be both horrible and slightly erotic. David Warner plays a minor role as College Chancellor Thayer. Although Unnamable II was made almost 5 years later, it takes place immediately after the last scene in the original movie. The dialog makes an attempt to get the audience acquainted with the events of the first movie and there is some stumbling on what to actually say without seeming to be overly narrative. I was disappointed that the crux of the story is changed baldly to make it fit the remaining events of the second film. I would recommend that you watch Unnamable before you watch Unnamable II. In many cases sequels and prequels can stand on their own; however, this isn't necessarily one of the cases. You will have to choose or incorporate the two different tales surrounding the creature's origins to satisfy your sense of logic. Better yet, just watch them for the entertainment factor. Synopsis: Joshua Winthrop is a 19th husband who uses the Necronomicon to summon a demon and it melds with his daughter Alyda. The creature is locked in the attic and remains there killing some of the local folk from then until 1988. After college students are killed and the creature falls into a hole near the house, Randolph Carter continues to investigate the murders and legends with the help of Professor Warren and his friend Howard. They find the creature trapped beneath the roots of an ancient tree and attempt to vanquish it. Instead, the creature is split into a demonic spirit and young nude woman. The demon pursues the woman through every location, killing whomever is in the way. Eventually, ending up at the university library, Randolph melds the demon with a chair!?! The youg woman ages rapidly as the lost power of the demon can no longer hold back 100 years of time. The epilogue has Randolph and Howard sitting next to the fireplace, while Randolph tosses pieces of the demon/chair onto the fire.
