ONE OF THE FUNNIEST SHOW ON TV
This was a great show, very funny. The complete third season is worth the money to complete the five seasons "Mad About You" was aired. This television show ended far to soon. Great shows.

"Mad About You", a series created by Paul Reiser and Danny Jacobson, was really an important show that bridged a gap in series style. The style of writing was quick and witty; it was important to the woman's movement (particularly when co-star, Helen Hunt, surpassed the master by winning a best Actress Oscar for "as Good As it Gets". The show made those of us who were married feel as though we fell short a bit; we all wondered how they could afford that apartment as we struggled to pay our mortgages in the suburbs, but the show connected the line between SEinfeld (Paul's old apartment was sublet to Kramer) and with "Friends" (Lisa Kudrow began as a double date and then stepped into the role of Ursula, the incompetent and endearing waitress at "Riffs" a restaurant that remained on TV well ... "Mad About You", a series created by Paul Reiser and Danny Jacobson, was really an important show that bridged a gap in series style. The writers of this show have skill in areas that are rarely seen: the two of them in real time alone locked in a bathroom, sitting in bed with a newspaper or discussing why five days has gone by without sex in the kitchen. (Five days? See what I mean about the married couples who watched this, both feeling inadequate but unable to speak about it. I wonder how many others are divorced now?) Still, this show is wonderful and like so many other important sit-coms did a great deal to move our culture forward. ":Mad About You' started a string of TV shows that made Manhattan look livable again. ("Will and Grace" was created because NBC was looking for a suitable replacement for this series) The first season went through some cast changes; contractual elements took veteran actor Richard Kind away and was written into the script as a divorce. This gave us a chance to see him in "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and be such an integral part of Sondheim's latest musical, "Road Show"-then called "Bounce." Paul's friend Selby simply slipped away and his cousin Ira replaced him. Helen Hunt's sister, Lisa, remained with the series: a gifted and strong actress who could take a mediocre script with what looked like very little for her and turn into into hysterical brilliance. Ru8de foreign neighbors and a dog who was only topped by "Frasiers" Eddie" all fell together by the middle of season two. If you're a happily married couple or a woman who loves romantic comedy, this is a spectacular buy for you. I've only gotten seasons one, two and three. As they become available, I'll make sure I have the entire series. As a divorced man, I'll go for "Seinfeld," "M*A*S*H" or "will And Grace" first, but I am very glad that when I'm in the mood for fast paced brilliant dialogue, I have "Mad About You".

Some real gems in Season 3
The episodes are, of course, very enjoyable (along with a young Helen Hunt with hair that's actualy attractive, as compared to the pin-stright, flat, lifeless hair she sported after Mabel came along that made her look plain, & older than she was [see her on the box set cover for season 3's DVD set]. And why did Helen always walk like her feet hurt??). I liked this series mainly through to the season 4 finale, when Jamie discovers she's pregnant, after their marriage nearly ends. After that, seasons 5 through 7 are all about the pregnancy, birth, and "poop-stories" of Mabel (acronym or not, what a disappointing choice for a name. I'll take "S.O.N.Y.A." any day! LOL). The positives are the great one-liners written for Paul's character, and the amazing parade of stars Paul Reiser & ... The positives are the great one-liners written for Paul's character, and the amazing parade of stars Paul Reiser & company got to sign on for appearances throughout the entire series, including the wonderful introduction, and repeated appearances, of ad-lib magician Mel Brooks as the irrepressible Uncle Phil, and the re-casting of Jamie's parents with the incomparable Carol Burnett and Carroll O'Connor (who we don't see enough of). Carol Burnett is hysterical as always, and easily outshines what's-her-name, cast from the beginning as Paul's annoying, childish, self-centered, manipulative mother. Fortunately, the character of Burt Buchmann is so lovable that he's always a delight to watch, and so it's especially heart-rending & poignant that the series finale includes his death and funeral. The problems I have with this DVD set are in the manufacturing of the disks themselves. The episodes were compressed to fit 8 to 9 on each double-layer DVD disk, so the video playback is somewhat grainy. Nevertheless, these early seasons have major "gem" episodes, especially season 3. So, enjoy all of it - "Mad About You" is a great sitcom.

I've always liked this series, I used to watch this show with my late husband, and he liked it, too. I already was a fan of this show. Helen Hunt was on this show before she won an oscar for best actress.
