Powerful, with great features and sound, but BEWARE of the ISSUES!
Some issues with these speakers since Day-1. The manufacturer held an invite-only event for Norcal dealers at Leo's. They had them set up to audition vs. top of the line established brands in their listening room. As we started arriving to the room, we immediately noticed that the speakers which were sitting there powered and warmed up, were making a very pronounced breathy hiss. This was without music playing at all. Once about a dozen of us were gathered our noise from conversation became louder than the hiss, so we didn't notice it any more at that point. But then the demo started. Indeed, these speakers/monitors reach for high-end specs and offer lots of power, BUT every time the music paused, everyone in the room noticed the breathy hiss these speakers give off when there's no ... We were, shall I put it mildly, NOT IMPRESSED. We grilled the factory team about this. They said that these were early units and that the hiss would be vanquished in production. Well, when the production units came through the channel, we all wanted to see that the issue had been fixed. Sad to say, it wasn't. And throughout the model's production lifespan, it continued to be the issue that everyone talked about. Strike One! And yet, if you can get past the hiss during periods of quiet, they sound great. The MTM configuration of the drivers is great, and lends itself to both horizontal and vertical positioning. BUT THERE'S ANOTHER TERRIBLE PROBLEM: The titanium dome tweeters which put out the HF so well, well, if you so much as breathe on them they dent. And then if you try to reverse the dent, they dent even worse! M-Audio never made available replacements. I am gobsmacked how any manufacturer could think that such fragile tweeters as these could responsibly be put in a product without protection. Which leads me to wonder, did the design of these speakers originally include some sort of grille to protect the HF tweeter, and did some smart product manager, trying to get their BOM costs down kill it? In the pictures you can see that the only thing protecting the tweeter is a skinny plastic rod across the front of it. Ouch! Look at every picture of these speakers on This the horribly dented tweeters. Strike Two! Last I have to comment about the price. Regardless of the MSRP and the MAP (lowest advertised price), I bought my first pair of these as demos from the manufacturer for $273.00 For a pair of monitors which perform as well as these do, in spite of their very noticeable warts and all, $300 was not a price this writer could pass up. Today I continue to use these and own several. I'll continue to buy them for spare parts to keep the base set running.
