Hiroyuki Sanada, who played Ujio in Edward Zwick's Hollywood epic THE LAST SAMURAI, stars in a different kind of samurai film in Yoji Yamada's poignant drama THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI. Sanada plays the title character (Seibei Iguchi), who gets his nickname because he is a lowly worker who chooses to go home to his family every night at twilight instead of going out with his fellow employees or women. Seibei's wife has recently died, so he is raising his two daughters alone, as well as caring for his aging mother. His well-connected uncle believes he should agree to an arranged marriage so he can be more manly, but Seibei is dedicated to living the life he's chosen. But when his married childhood friend, Tomoe (Rie Miyazawa), wants a divorce from her abusive husband (Ren Osugi), Seibei defends her honor and defeats the sword-wielding man with a piece of wood. When Seibei's clan learns of his victory, the leaders command him to kill Zenmon Yogo (Min Tanaka), something that goes against everything he believes in. Based on the stories of Shuuehei Fujisawa and set during the Meiji Restoration of 19th-century Japan, THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI, which was nominated for a 2004 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, is a special kind of movie, loaded with heart and humanity, a very different samurai film that breaks movingly from the traditions of the genre.

A story of survival and love.
I love the genre but it’s not my cup of tea. Great writing, excellent casting, a solid movie overall. The main character was definitely gripping. It lacked an element I enjoy, but this movie isn’t about action.

A gem, definitely a keeper!
A gem of a story beautifully told and depicted! Not your typical samurai movie since it is set in one of those briefly peaceful times. Our hero is a devoted father with two very young daughters who is a low level administrator. He is forced by the samurai code to agree to do the clan's dirty work of killing a rebellious member who happens to be perhaps the most skilled long sword samurai fencer in the clan. Our hero uses the short sword, and doesn't even own one, having sold his to pay for an expensive burial ceremony, as expected by the clan. A childhood friend aids our hero and his daughters in some of the more mundane aspects of life. He is unkempt! But with her help things improve domestically, and offer the hope of a better future; but first there is the matter of the duty to ... A gem of a story beautifully told and depicted! Haunting movie that I had to own
I viewed the movie "The Twilight Samurai" before and enjoyed it so much I had to get my own copy. Unlike the flashy theatrics associated with kung fu/martial arts-type movies, this one represents the reality -- a reality where even samurai have different ranks and some are like army privates doing the grunt work and thankless jobs. In this story, "my hero" is a widower with two young daughters and a mother who has dementia, subsisting on low wages. What makes him different is his quiet determination to do what is right and his well-hidden skills as a swordsman. Can he re-connect with his childhood friend who loves him? Can he fulfill the task assigned by his clan to kill a master swordsman? Like all the great Japanese movies that I've seen, this is very long and may seem to go on ... This is a superb Samurai movie.
The actors, the plot/storyline, the visuals are all top notch. The use of a short sword against a long one was new to me and interesting. I would love to see more of this directors films, and more of the lead actors. Yes, it was money well spent.

Great Japanese movie, great DVD, but can't turn subtitles off.
Twilight Samurai is a wonderful film with great acting, story, cinematography. I'm so glad I could pick it up at such a low cost. It's a great product. But, if you're looking to watch a foreign film in that foreign language, make sure the site says which subtitles are offered, which shows if they can be turned off. Otherwise, you'll be looking at the subtitles throughout the film.
