About this product

Product Information

The Antarctic winter, with temperatures 100ø below zero, shuts supply lines down completely; conditions are too treacherous for planes or boats & the only connection with the rest of the world is satellite hook-up. During the long winter of 1999, Dr. Nielsen, the only physician on a staff of forty-one people, discovered a lump in her breast. Consulting via satellite e-mail with doctors in the U.S., she was forced to perform a biopsy & in June began to treat herself with chemotherapy, in order to insure that she could survive until conditions permitted her rescue in October. A daring rescue by the Air National Guard ensued, who landed, dropped off a replacement physician, & in less than five minutes took off with Dr. Nielsen. Set in one of the most remote & desolate yet strikingly beautiful landscapes on earth, Jerri Nielsen's narrative of her transforming experiences is a thrilling adventure of researchers & scientists embattled by a hostile environment, a chronicle of the marvels -- & limits -- of modern medical technology, & a penetrating exploration of the dynamics of an isolated, intensely connected community faced with adversity. But at its core this is a powerfully moving drama of one woman's voyage of self-discovery & courage & the fierce dedication of scores of colleagues -- both known & unknown to her -- whose aid proved to be her salvation.

Well packaged and shipped quickly! The seller was super nice and made sure there was no risk of damage in transit. It doesn’t fit a full bar of lava soap, unfortunately, but that’s my fault for not checking first. Otherwise, absolutely no issues and it would purchase again!

  • A real page turner

I really enjoyed reading this book. I had intended to take it on vacation to read, but after starting it at home I just couldn't put it down. I am in the medical profession and found all the details of practicing medicine on the South Pole fascinating. Jerri does her own breast biopsy with only an ice cube to numb! Even though I knew how it would end I found myself crying right along with the author as she deals with cancer. She also details the extremes faced at the South Pole and just how a community can even exist in such a harsh climate. Whether an outdoor enthusiast, a medical professional, or just someone who enjoys a good read I recomend this book highly.

  • ICE BOUND by JERRI NIELSEN , MARYANNE VOLLER

INTERESTING AUTOBIGRAPHY OF JERRIS PLIGHT IN THE ANTARCTIC WITH CANCER. I TRIED TO FOLLOW HER PLIGHT IN 1999, AS MUCH AS THE MEDIA COVERED IT, THEN LOST TRACK OF HER, THEN IN JUNE 2009, I HAD THOUGHT ABOUT JERRI, WONDERING HOW SHE WAS MORE THAN 10 YEARS LATER, ONLY TO FIND, DAYS LATER SHE HAD PASSED AWAY JUNE 2009, NEARLY THE TIME I THOUGHT OF HER, EERIE... I BOUGHT THIS SPECIFIC COPY AFTER THAT, BECAUSE JERRI AUTOGRAPHED IT PERSONALLY ON 13 FEBRUARY 2001 AND THAT DATE WAS EXACTLY ONE YEAR BEFORE I LOST MY FATHER TO CANCER 13 FEBRUARY 2002, THE SAME EXACT DAY COUNTRY SINGER WAYLON JENNINGS WHO SINGS THE DUKES OF HAZZARD THEME AND OTHER SONGS PASSED AWAY.

  • Good Title

It is great. I knew nothing historically about the POLE and now I do. But, most importantly I knew it was based on a true story about her developing breast cancer while at the pole and since I am a breast cancer survivor the story really appealed to me. It is especially compelling as of this date because she recently died of the cancer after developing health issues again.
