Pentax, Great Camera
When I first turned this camera on, I wasnt ready for the cheap feel it had, but after using it for a few moths now, I am very surprised and I love it! It has all the features I need, It takes a few weeks to really get every option down, but once you do its got an array of useful camera tools. It doesnt seem like it could sustain many accidental drops, but for under $100 the quality pictures it takes, makes it worth every penny! If you can get this camera at a good price, I would suggest grabbing it, 8 megapixels should be the ebay standard for taking pictures, my old 4.0 megapixel camera just doesnt cut it for catching the details needed for selling here. The one con I have is the focus factor,. Its a hit and miss area. It could be that Im not utilizing all the options to get good focus, ... Great Camera, Under-Rated! Exceptional Performance.
I purchased this primarily as a take-everywhere point-and-shoot camera. I selected it for features, quality, and price. I love the multi-scene menu for pre-selected exposure/focus modes, they work surprisingly well. Too, if offers and almost dizzying array of manually selected features for exposure, composition, white balance, contrast and even manual focus. For those of us coming from old-school 35mm SLR backgrounds this is a breath of fresh air to creativity with a pocket-sized digital. All this, while offering my somewhat tech-challenged wife, the simplicity of "Green Mode", a mode of operation for the total tech "green" person, which effectively renders the camera a no-brainer, true point and shoot piece of equipment while delivering stunning results in full auto "green mode" ... I purchased this primarily as a take-everywhere point-and-shoot camera. I selected it for features, quality, and price. I love the multi-scene menu for pre-selected exposure/focus modes, they work surprisingly well. Too, if offers and almost dizzying array of manually selected features for exposure, composition, white balance, contrast and even manual focus. For those of us coming from old-school 35mm SLR backgrounds this is a breath of fresh air to creativity with a pocket-sized digital. All this, while offering my somewhat tech-challenged wife, the simplicity of "Green Mode", a mode of operation for the total tech "green" person, which effectively renders the camera a no-brainer, true point and shoot piece of equipment while delivering stunning results in full auto "green mode" (Denoted on the menu mode selection as a green smilie face). After using the camera for a period of time, I never cease to be both surprised and pleased at the superb performance of this little package. The 8.1 mp resolution is sharp and crisp, with excellent color saturation, little vignetting, and minimal barrel distortion on wide angle. The resolution is somewhat soft at the outer edges of the image, but the balance of the image is tack-sharp. This camera is amazing in its ability even in extemely challenging low-light conditions to produce excellent images with available light, and the vibration stabilization mode truly shows its worth and effectiveness in these low light conditions, or when using the 3x optical zoom hand held. Excellent battery life is also a big plus as well. When not using the flash, a typical set of premium alkaline batteries will yield close to 100 photos! Cheap, plentiful SD memory is also a plus for this camera. Before purchase I compared features, handling, photo quality, durability, battery life, ergonomics, menu navigation and physical size with many competing models (Due to extended back-country/wilderness use, AA battery compatibility was mandatory), and for the price, found this camera to be at the top of the heap, especially when considering price. Another key aspect when I was selecting a new digital camera was the shutter lag time and write-to-memory lag time. This camera is very respectable, going from a cold start to photo ready in under five seconds, and shutter lag time (when pre-focused)of less than half a second! Multiple shots are very managable with five shots in under seven seconds! Multi-burst mode is much faster with excellent performance. Lastly, while not a make or break issue for me, the video capability is amazing, as is the audio. I have owned other digital cameras prior to this one, Fuji, Cannon, Nikon, Sony and another Pentax (S40), and this is by far and away the best performer of the pack! Negatives of the camera? Lack of optical viewfinder (I like to run with the display turned off to maximize battery life in the back-country). The supplied software with the camera leaves much to be desired, but there are multiple downloadable free programs that do an excellent job of this if one doesn't already have PhotoShop. I do wish that the huge, very clear digital display were inset below the back surface of the camera for protection, due to its relative size it appears to be rather vulnerable being flush with the camera's back. Would I buy another? You bet, I'll be getting two more, one for each of my college student daughters! For around $100, it's a WHOLE LOT OF CAMERA

An excellent camera in a small package, easy to keep close at hand!
This is the third Pentax Optio E40 I have owned, I take photos of work projects and I haven't always been careful to protect the LCD; however, this one is carefully guarded. I have used many cameras, point and shoot, SLR, both film and digital; this little camera is the best "all-around" camera I have used. The zoom incldes digital and is excellent. Panoramic mode is an option I use often; other modes include snow, pet, action, and portrait, among others. The main reason I have searched for a replacement is the picture quality, specifically the color accuracy. I have tried two similar cameras by Canon and Panasonic and there is no comparison. There may not be too many left, but if you see one, I wouldn't hesitate to get it....before I do. Don't think twice about factory refurbished, ... Perfect if Protected
I'm going to get the one negative remark out of the way before I blast away with the positive on this product; It's delicate. I broke mine in the field in Fort Drum NY during a weekend exercise. because this was such an excellent product, I'm purchasing another one regardless. I believe I will be more careful with it this time. This camera is perfect for someone who wants to manually focus on their subjects. Unlike most point-and-shoot digital cameras, which focus on either the middle of the viewfinder or a recognized face, you can focus on a set distance of your choice; JUST LIKE AN SLR! As a hobbyist Photographer, this is probably the most important function to me. Most other point and shoot cameras already have EV compensation, Light balance, and other things such as manual ISO ... I did make the mistake of purchasing the Optio e80; thinking it would have this same function, which it didn't. The back-dated Optio e40 is perfect for someone who still wants a little control over their photography while planning with a budget or trying to keep portability. This also makes a great backup camera for freelance photographers.

This camera takes great pictures!!!
This is a GREAT camera. It doesn't come with a lot of written instructions but you can use the disk that comes with it for more help. It's lightweight and has a lot of features, although it is a battery drainer! But OVERALL I really enjoy using it!
