About this product

Product Information

The Zeiss Distagon T ZE 18mm f/3.5 is a heavy-duty, manual focus lens that is perfect for those with a serious itch for landscape or nature photography. The Zeiss Distagon T ZE comes equipped with an electronically controlled aperture for ease of use and a well damped fluted focus ring that makes working with this Zeiss lens an absolute pleasure. Yet what separates this manual focus lens from the pack is the truly exceptional build quality. There are no plastic parts—just a surprisingly light full-metal brass body supplemented by a chromium-plated brass front bayonet. There is even an all-metal petal shaped hood that locks on snugly and securely, so users can be sure that once they lock the lens to the camera, it's on for good. Compatibility with Canon cameras is never an issue either, as this Zeiss lens works with everything from the EOS 620 to the 5D Mark II. Overall, for those photographers searching for a well-built, ultra-sharp upgrade for their current Canon lens, look no further than the Zeiss Distagon T ZE.

  • Zeiss is much sharper in the corners than Canon lenses on a full frame body

Having owned or used four Canon wide angle lenses, I was very disappointed with all of them on a 5D full frame body. 20-35 L lens was the worst, 17-40mm and 20mm F/2.8 were poor, and my 28mm f/2.8 must have been a bad sample. You had to stop down to f/16 or f/22 to get the corners in, but diffraction then ruined the overall picture. I read the reviews of the Zeiss 18mm f/3.5 and their 21mm f/2.8, and when the 18mm showed up on eBay for $999 I took the plunge. I could not be happier with the Zeiss super-wide lens. Electronically everything works, including EXIF data. The only down side is the lens is manual focus. With this lens I generally zone focus, thought the beep and green "in focus" dot work on my three Canon bodies. There is some hysteresis, so the focus aid ...

  • Zeiss 18mm f/3.5 Distagon T is a Long Term Investment

Like all Zeiss lenses, their 18mm f/3.5 Distagon T lens is a long term investment. I like it a lot, especially as used on my BMPCC 6k body. Housed as a ZE, ZF, cp.2, cp.3 or in other guises, it's always a very useable lens — with "that" world-class look the Zeiss glass creates. The fact that it "only" opens up to f/3.5 has not been a problem for me. Most modern cameras have such great low light capability that shooting in low light is simply not as big a problem as in years past. Plus, being a wide angle lens, the bokeh that we covet in other lens, such as a 50mm f/1.4 wide open, is not usually the prime factor when reaching for an 18mm lens.
